I bet GA couldnt get shot of them quick enough.
Sounds like another load of rubbish tbh.
Like the 153s.
at least 2 of the ex-GA 153s were "delivered" from Landore to Canton today

@Icky Qualms how did they suddenly become so bad across the border, and why did most of them need to have work done at Tyseley (170270 went there twice!) and a few at Central Rivers...? and what's with the engine, door and lighting faults etc...?

That's a very uninformed viewpoint - Turbostars have been in reliable service with other TOCs for many years.

It's hardly unexpected that TfW would have teething issues with their "new" stock… they'll bed in pretty quickly.

Class 170s seemed to be out in force today, observed on a journey from Risca & Pontymister to Gloucester. 170 201/2/4 and 273 were on Ebbw Vale line trains and two others on Maesteg to Cheltenham services, so perhaps some of the issues have been resolved?

Change-up is about 70mph, so prolonged use at slower than that is certainly going to push up the fuel consumption
Would it be feasible to re-gear them to change that transition speed, or is it effectively cast-in to the current traction equipment?
Just wondering how they'll cope if, as planned, they run the Heart of Wales line in a couple of years' time? Other than on the mainline sections north of Craven Arms or south-east of Llanelli, I don't think they'll get above about 45mph on that.

6 is the normal maximum in use so far now

60 max on HOWL proper, 75 max Llanelli - Swansea and 90 max Craven Arms - Shrewsbury (though that speed is only realistically achievable northbound). If they were only working on that route it might be an issue but hopefully mixed in with other workings it might make things manageable.

Doesn't make sense how they have all of a sudden gone unreliable :s
Lack of crew experience with faults. Lack of familiarity with depot staff. General Canton car sheds “maintenance”.

There’s three reasons that make sense for a start.

I would think that changing the transition speed would alter the top speed but considering there are only two sections of track in Wales with speed limits over 90mph, they could be re-geared to a top speed of 90 without likely affecting timings

Are they just leaving them like that or will they be fitting them with Std class seats throughout at some point do you know?
I believe that the 170s will be given further refurbishment to TfW spec somewhere along the line (as they're being kept for the duration of the franchise and a mock-up was shown on the TV advert) - I'm guessing that's when the cabins will be removed...?

Not that it'll make much difference but on ScotRail those "cabins" can seat 14 standard class against the 7 or 9 first

There seems to be a three car 170 on the lower shed near to pullmans rail that hasn't moved for weeks now, wonder why that is?

170206...? (I wonder why too...)

The number of them in service is increasing though as 7 were out today (170272/273/202/203/205/207/208), and all all-day as well, no "early failures".
170201 wasn't out today but has been used a lot, unlike 170204 which I believe only went out on one day. 170270/206 are the delivered ones that haven't yet been used to my knowledge, while 170271 is the one staying with GA until March/April. Still need to sort out a ride on one

Was today (18/1/20) 170205's first day in service with TfW...? Or did it enter service on a day in the range of the 13/1/20 to the 17/1/20...?

It done a training run on the 15th, but was in service on the 16th on Ebbw Vale runs.

Have 170270 or 170206 entered passenger service with TfW yet...?

I'm told 170206 is in no fit state for service just yet. Requires numerous things to get it up to standard.

Thanks for that, I'm not surprised really as had gathered. I guess you've answered @BBob123's question

There is no path for 150271s movement in the system yet but it should call at Tyseley for certain work as has been described up thread and as the others that have transferred have done. They are there for about a week before continuing on to Canton where they are checked over and any minor mods that need to be performed to make them compatible to TFW specs. Depending on it's condition it could be in traffic within a few days.

Now that the 170's have moved into wales, what do G.A. have now then, but it sounds like they are not happy losing them.
