The C2C website brings up two options for an annual ticket between Southend East and London Terminals. One "Valid only for travel via (changing trains or passing through) Barking", the other "Travel is allowed via any permitted route." Both tickets are identically priced.

All services both Fenchurch St, and Liverpool St at the weekend go via Barking. So what is the difference between the two, and which is the most advantageous to have?

There may be alternative permitted routes (using more than one train) between Southend East and London Terminals. The valid only ticket limits you, as it suggests, to routes that pass through Barking. The any permitted ticket allows you to use alternative routes. I'm sure either me a bit later or someone else will be able to see if there are any alternative permitted routes that avoid Barking. If both tickets cost the same, I'd purchase the any permitted one for the additional freedom.

The Any Permitted can be valid via Shenfield & Romford using the walking interchange between Southend Central & Victoria, though in this case only if issued as a Travelcard.

Can the any permitted also be used Southend - Upminster - Romford - Liverpool Street?

Yes that is a valid route, as it's within 3 miles of the shortest route (less than a mile longer, in fact)

Thanks, so in this instance where the ticket would only be valid to FST/LST the Shenfield route would not be valid?

As a Southend Vic/Central to London Terminals annual is £5,148 compared to £3,740 for the any permitted route annual ticket for Southend Central to London.

The problem with Southend East to London Terminals is that Southend East isn't associated with the Wickford Routeing Point.

Arguably, it should be, and the price of 'Any Permitted' should rise to match the fare from Southend Cen/Vic.

The fares from Southend East to London Terminals makes no sense; I suspect that in practice many passengers and staff alike probably think it's valid via Wickford and Shenfield. It's counter-intuitive that it isn't valid!

Counter-intuitive? Surely to a lay person the intuitive route is via Barking rather than a walk across the centre of town and a senic trip into mid Essex?
