The transport select committee chair will move to conservative when it restarts.

Nominations are at https://www.parliament.uk/business/...-committee-chair-elections-2020/#jump-link-23

Some bullet points from there pitches with ballot tomorrow and chairs announced.

Robert Goodwill (Scarborough/Whitby)
With Northern and Trans Pennine serving my own Constituency, my inbox leaves me in no doubt about the improvements people expect

Karl McCartney(Lincoln)
2003-5: 2 years with Strategic Rail Authority: drew up protocols for franchising process after crisis managing the Kent Franchise process following Connex's removal

Served for 5.5 yrs on the Transport Select Committee from 2012-2017

Huw Merriman (Bexhill)
I’ve been a member of the Transport Select Committee since 2015. I am nominated by Lilian Greenwood, the previous Chair....

I am standing because I do not believe that the Transport sector delivers value in the UK. Too many revolving doors and a lack of competition, accountability and responsibility causes our constituents to receive a poor service and provision.

We can do better. The Committee is respected across the sector. By coming up with ideas for change, we can make a positive contribution and improve transport for all. This will only happen if we find a way through the walls of resistance

Martin Vickers (Cleethorpes) - hasnt bothered with a pitch

Hopefully Huw gets it as he gave fayling grayling and the Thameslink 2018 Timetable fiasco attendees good scrutiny

Robert Goodwill was a recent minister in DfT, so would know his onions.
As long as Graham Stringer doesn't get the job...

I hope he gets the job because of the second paragraph in his statement.

Oh dear — a London & South East MP.

No a South East MP from and area where investment is less I am told per traveller than in the North. North gets all the publicity but places in the South East get little or no investment when you take London out of the equation, plus the benefits that London gets have very little effect (if any) for places like Bexhill and Battle.

Indeed his constituency has many issues (not just transport ones) that are similar to many northern coastal towns.

Those appearing before the TSC won't like this as he is good at grilling!

The last 3 TSC chairs covering 23 years were "northerners" (going backwards: from Nottingham, Liverpool and Crewe).

Some nice compliments paid today in the Commons to Lilian Greenwood for her work as the TSC chair, including from Huw Merriman the new chair.

Huw Merriman 279 -Elected
Robert Goodwill - 172
Martin Vickers - 51
Karl McCartney - 48

Vickers and McCartney not in the running, Vickers does travel by train to London from his constituency a bit at least and nobody knows who McCartney is.

Hopefully the next leader of the Labour Party will have to good sense to give Lilian the shdaow transport brief, she certainly knows her stuff.

I hope he is as good as Gwyneth Dunwoody was. I met her on several occasions and even appeared before the Transport Committee when she was in charge once on an aviation related matter. She certainly gave some a good going over; sitting in the "audience" at several hearings just behind witnesses, I could see the sweat and nervous twitches...

I've long been retired but I look forward to seeing what happens this time around. Watching some of Lillian Greenwood's interrogations of witnesses on the timetable meltdown was an excellent way to spend some time; the lass done well.

Ditto. I once appeared before Gwyneth Dunwoody. I will never forget her words to me at one stage in the proceedings.
"Do carry on Mr..........., you are doing rather well". A source of immense pride!
