Was there ever services calling at Newton then Uddingston?
There was in March/April 2019 on Sundays during the time the line to Rutherglen/Polmadie was closed when all the WCML stuff ran on the Cathcart Circle. The Lanark service ran fast from Central HL via the Cathcart Circle with first stop Newton (Probably for a driver change but it was still an offical passenger stop) then onwards across the South Connect Line to Uddingston and Bellshill etc. It ran hourly.

Deighton and Brighouse?

Was there a direct service in the past?
In the days of the "Grand Tour" there was a direct service between the two, but the Brighouse/Bradford leg always omitted the stop at Deighton so you'd have to pass through to Huddersfield and alight from the Wakefield 'leg'. Likewise in order to reach BGH from DHN direct you had to board the ex-Wakefield service towards Huddersfield and double-back. The original Deighton station was on the Kirkburton branch, so Brighouse couldn't be reached.

Brighouse reopened in 2000, so BR weren't involved.

Liverpool Lime Street to Moorfields. Probably only about 1 km apart (less than 10 minutes walk) but as the Wirral line loop is unidirectional you would need to change at either Central or James Street. Similarly with Central to Lime Street.
Not to mention James Street to Central, and Moorfields to James Street. But with Lime Street to Moorfields, and Moorfields to James Street, I think we're going against the OP's stipulation that there must have been a regular service at one time.

PTSO or platform depending on the weather
Anerley or Penge West to Crystal Palace
Requires a change at Norwood Junction or Sydenham. Quicker to walk through the park...

Penge West to Penge East
Very circuitous by train (as on different lines and serve different termini). 10min by foot

New Beckenham or Clock House to Kent House
Again, different lines and quicker by foot

They may be close together but can't be travelled to easily (by rail) which I assume is the spirit of this thread

I think the criteria in the opening post make it pretty clear:

  • Stations must have had a regular service between them at some time
  • Stations must have a passenger-standard railway connecting them

Are there any direct trains from Acton Bridge (or Hartford or Winsford) to Warrington BQ, which are adjacent stations on the WCML?

Pilning to Severn Beach used to take about seven minutes. The direct line no longer exists so it now takes 1hr 15 minutes, changing at Bristol Temple Meads.

I once travelled on a train which stopped at Warrington BQ, and Acton Bridge, and Hartford, and Winsford. It was actually a Glasgow to London train, but we came screeching to a halt at Acton Bridge to find a failed 310(?) on an ex-Liverpool working in the adjacent platform. We picked up its Hartford and Winsford stops as well. If only that sort of thing were to happen today.
(I've got it in my head that it was a failed 310, not a failed 304, even though I don't recall 310s working so far north. Or did they replace 304s at one point?)
Of course, that wouldn't count as a regular working..

Are you suggesting that there is a direct service between Newton-le-Willows and Wigan Wallgate?
Looks like I messed up somewhere, it seems there is indeed only one train a day from Newton-le-willows to Wigan North western and none to wallgate.

Totton to Redbridge - used to have the hourly Totton to Romsey service, but when that became the figure 6 Salisbury to Romsey, there were no more trains. I believe it may get one or two peak a day between them, but otherwise you'd have to go all the way to Southampton (passing through Redbridge!) and back out.

And has there ever been a regular service between Eaglescliffe and Stockton? I believe the only direct service now is the Sunday-only Hartlepool services, and I think there only two of them.

Said service ran daily in the BR diesel era, IIRC up to the economy cuts c 1990, and I imagine there have been trains Eaglescliffe-Stockton ever since both station were open.

Back in the mid 70's, I used to meet up with friends at Billingham Forum(weekends & school holidays), we would all travel there by train. They would travel direct from Allen's West & Eaglescliffe, and I would travel from Thornaby. I can't remember where each service originated or there destinations, but being hourly services it meant there were at least 2 trains per hour between Stockton & Hartlepool (and possibly beyond) back then.

I would pick Liverpool Central northern line to James street station, there used to be a line direct from James street to central station, since the loop line has been built o now have to get off the northern line transfer to the wirral line to get from either station.

Both stations are 10 minutes walk from each other.

The former connection is now used as a stock exchange link between northern and wirral line.

Manors to Jesmond.
I can't see how this counts:
  • There's no direct railway between Manors Metro and Jesmond Metro
  • There's never been any passenger service between Manors Metro and the closed Jesmond BR station (only stock transfer passing through)
  • Manors (North) no longer exists and there's no longer a railway between where it was and either the closed Jesmond BR station or Jesmond Metro
  • There has never a direct railway between Manors (East), which is the current Manors NR station, and Jesmond Metro
  • Manors NR and Manors Metro share a name, but not a location

Clarkston to Muirend?
No direct link although there would have been if the plan to reroute East Kilbride had been followed through. There is a thread on one of the local history websites that investigated the past use of the siding alongside Williamwood golf club and concluded that it was never actually connected to the EK line.

I'm not sure if this counts as it involves a preserved line.
Winchester to Alresford used to be a 9½ mile journey taking 19 minutes. It is now around 73½ miles via Woking, Alton and the Watercress Line, taking at least two hours.

Ashfield & Springburn?

There was the period when the Anniesland-GQS High Level & GQS High Level-Falkirk Grahamston services were merged during the Cowlairs Tunnel/Queen St High Level blockade in 2016 to form a Anniesland-Falkirk Grahamston service, thus providing these two with a direct service (can't recall exactly how frequent it was though); for about 20 weeks at least. In normal circumstances, you have to go to Queen St (via either Alex' Parade, Bellgrove & High Street into the Low Level or directly via Cowlairs into the High Level) and change there.

Not sure if this counts but Bedwyn to Pewsey.
A 10 minute journey but there are only a handful of direct services otherwise you have to go to Newbury and back on yourself.
