From Nexus website:

Metro services are suspended across the network due to a signalling system fault.

The problem, which occurred in the Metro control room in South Gosforth, means that signals are not working and trains cannot operate to any part of the system.

Passengers are advised to find alternative modes of travel. Metro tickets are being accepted on all local bus services.

Nexus are working to rectify the fault as quickly as possible.

A Nexus spokesman said: “A fault with our Rail Traffic Management System means that we are unable to operate any trains across the Metro network until further notice. This is affecting all of the signals across our network. This occurred at around 10.35am today.

“All trains on the network are at a standstill until this problem is resolved.

“Passengers are advised to seek alternative modes of travel.

“We’re sorry for the inconvenience and disruption this is causing to passengers.”
ITV Tyne Tees also reporting the story.

What gets me is will Metro be compensating those that are stranded on Metrocars across the network that miss flights or train connections?

I do hope they kept the receipt for this amazing new panel they installed.

It's never ever worked properly.

It wasn't the RTMS that failed. The entire control room lost everything. They had no IT access at all.

Nexus has posted an apology/explanation on their website:
We are still investigating the full cause of this – but during urgent maintenance at our South Gosforth Control Centre the data feed from Metro’s train management software to the control room monitors and displays went down. As our control room employees could not see the position of trains we halted all services for safety reasons, while the fault with monitors was identified and systems checked and then brought back into use.

The train management system itself (RTMS) did not fail and continued to operate safely.

Sounds familiar. It’s not a Thales system by any chance is it?

It's made by a company called Resonate but signalling was not lost, they regained control of the signals by using the local panels which aren't located in Gosforth.

Fwik they were installing a new network switch for the power desk and then lost everything

Likely incidents that could be caused by such work are either tripping some circuit breakers (perhaps within a UPS), or inadvertently introducing a Spanning Tree loop — a fair amount of network equipment is sensitive enough that it will continue to misbehave even after the loop is broken.
