Great to see more and more Pacers acquired for preservation! Wonder if any of the Welsh 142s/143s will be saved?

How many of these Pacers are destined to rot in a siding to be restored mañana?

All except 142026 and 142033 are going to be ran often
Until the enthusiasm wears off, spares run out or cash isn’t available and they get parked up as another addition to the junkyards littering so many preserved railways.

Much better with quality over quantity: i.e. a small number of looked after sets with spares acquired to support for the long term.

True or given to ones able to manufacture the parts like how the tank museum makes its own parts I know it's different but I hope you catch my drift

Surprised to see 153373 on Penistone line 13.12 service. Usually has been a 144. It's in better condition than Northern 150s - maybe even been cleaned at some point, but leg room just as bad.

Presumably a 144 missing this morning then... Dogboxes are usually only found there on Sundays.

I was under the impression that C F Booth was going to play a larger role in the disposal of the Pacers, yet to date only 142 005/044 have moved there (by road from NH). Does anyone know if Rotherham is to be the final destination for any further 142s (or indeed if they have their eye on the 143s and/or 144s)?

Various social media posts are also stating that the remaining 142s at NH come off after mid February - this surely should only happen once sufficient compliant stock is to hand? Perhaps CAF have improved their delivery schedules and/or older units are returning after mods. I hope someone can either confirm or deny.

An acquaintance of mine who has a lot of contacts, says that he has been told that there is no booked work for the remaining NH 142s after 14th February. We will have to wait and see what happens.

So more 195s are coming into service by then I'm guessing?

I must admit I am surprised at how few 142s are being used and yet short forms are still being reported.

And the mystery surrounding the 142s up at Heaton continues, they are allowed to operate but have not turned a wheel so far this year?

It's all head scratching why Northerns 142s must be coupled to a complient unit yet 144s and other uncompliant stock can operate solo and the 142s in Wales can operate solo.

There is a sort-of "special case" with regard to a number of services in West Yorkshire which have low usage and/or platform restrictions, such as Huddersfield to Castleford and Bradford. Currently in the hands of solo 153s (or 2-car 144s), the current situation with Northern means what happens next is anyone's guess. PRM-ing half-a-dozen or so 153s would be a quick fix for the next few years but they might be a bit of a squeeze in the peaks. There's also 144012 but as a one-off I can't see it outliving its classmates by much.

I still think that 144012 (the evolution unit) will be the last Pacer in service what with it being the only one that is PRM'd for the job. I'd imagine that those 144's that are getting preserved will be moved to the site of preservation once Northern have done with them rather than being shunted to Gascoigne Wood. What gets me is that no urban explorers have decided to wandered up to GW to have a gander at the disused units.

Anyway, I've added some minor updates to the list about the sets aquired by Rushden Historical Transport Society.

I imagine they will not run them after this date and once the DFT takes over on the 1st of March they will bring them back out as they are still needed. When the 769s begin service they can maybe then start to withdraw there remaining pacers

Are 142023 and 142041 still in use or not? One list has them Warm stored while another list seems to say they are still in use

I hear from roumers 142023 is going for Preservation to Plym Valley Railway upon withdrawal that’s what I heard

I wonder if that will become a 'Skipper' if so? 142018 and 142023 being the only two left of the original Laira Skippers not scrapped/spoken for

Keep hearing rumours about them being used for route learning between scarborough and York for new services to start at the next timetable change ,but that might change now with the OLR taking over the franchise
