This train departs a few minutes earlier than the 04.28 to London Euston. It then sits at Carstairs for 7 mins for the latter train to overtake. It carries on to Lockerbie where it is timetabled to sit for 13 mins. It could leave Glasgow at 04.39 and follow the Euston service and leave Lockerbie as now. There seem to be no other trains at this time on this section of route. Why the strange timetabling?

I'm not sure it could - the 0428 Euston would be timed faster I think so this might be the only way to have the train arrive Lockerbie when it does.

Did this used to be a unit split at Carstairs? With one portion heading off to Edinburgh while one went south?

Not sure I follow this - if the waits at Carstsirs and Lockerbie were each reduced to 2 mins, then departure would be at 0438 - well clear of the 0428 to Euston.
However at present this slot is taken by TPE ECS working 5M91 Polmadie to Edinburgh, so not available.

It could of course divide at Carstairs, as it used to, but perhaps no longer possible with current and planned stock ?

Running 350s even as a single is optimistic since the unit had an altercation with a horse, let alone a double! Just look on Journey Check how many Scottish diagrams are 3 vs 4.

What's it called? It's called Cumbernauld
I had worked out a while ago that one of the reasons for the 04:22 departing at that time instead of at 05:09 is that should if the line is closed at any point between Glasgow and Carlisle for engineering works, this allows for a rail replacement bus service to meet the train at Carlisle (which departs at 06:25 or thereabouts).

It is roughly 2 hours between Glasgow and Carlisle by road, therefore engineering works along the ex Caledonian metals would have no effect on the overall journey time.

Is this service busy from Glasgow? I know will be later in its journey.

Although this is an unscientific observation as I have only been on that departure 2 or 3 times, there has hardly been anybody on it upon departure from Glasgow.

Regarding the busyness of this particular train, I believe it has been totally rammed southbound after Preston going by a historic report into the most overcrowded trains during the AM peak.

If a Class 350:
Its dead Glasgow to Carlisle, moderate Carlisle to Lancaster,
Busy Lancaster to Preston,
Full but plenty of standing room to Manchester,
Moderate to Airport.

I think that situation prevailed when the train ran via Wigan and was notoriously crowded between Wigan NW and Manchester Oxford Road, because, of course, it was an attractive train for commuters ex-Wigan, even if they did have to stand. It now runs via Bolton and M/F does not stop at all between Preston and Oxford Road. (Saturdays it stops at Bolton to drop off).

I see , unless you stay in the City Centre , then its a taxi in for that train.

Yes, very true. It was, when it stopped in Wigan, one of the most overcrowded trains in the country according to DfT. Now, via Bolton, I'm told it's nothing like as bad.

From where I am, thats normally the earliest service I can make down the WCML as there is a smooth connection from an arrival from Ayr.

First EK on a weekday gets into Central just before 7 so either 0710 or 0737 . Before that its the bus into town. EK really ought to have a few earlier and later services.
