Judging by Northern's RTT Upload for the May timetable they still haven't decided what to remove from Castlefield. Is that likely to be December then?

I read in modern railway that there were no plans to remove services in May , any removals were to take place in December.

Please God the end of the franchise will see the end of decent seats on 158's being ripped out and replaced by modern crap.

Unfortunately it appears not. The FAQ suggests that virtually all contracts that ARN had will transfer to OLR, so I would assume that refurbishment will continue as originally planned. Other posts on here seem to back that up.

Typical. These sorts of things only continue with the bad potential outcomes, not the good ones.

I find the unrefurbished 158s really uncomfortable. That's assuming I can actually sit down, I can't sit on a lot of the seats due to the lack of legroom.

I find them bliss. Assuming I can get a seat.

They had to go to EU tender because they went out to tender.

If you don't put them out to tender WTO rules don't apply.
Which is why before the current insanity most NHs work was not carreid out under tendered contracts.

Also we have defence tenders going abroad because the Government chose to make them go abroad.
There is nothing in WTO rules that requires this.
For example, numerous countries in the world maintain state arsenal systems, even those have fallen out of vogue in the West.

Even if WTO rules did require it, the WTO is a dead letter anyway.

No, under legislation ANY new service not entirely provided in house and above the value threshold has to go to competitive tender and advertised, this included clinical and non-clinical services. It’s not a choice to go to tender or not. The same applies to defence, with specific national security based exclusions.

The seats themselves are relatively comfortable, but there isn't much legroom and Northern (both Arriva and Serco) have let them get into an appalling state of disrepair.

In terms of the state of repair, the ones which Arriva have refurbished are lovely.

I don't find the legroom much of a problem myself, but I've always thought the 158's have a good balance of table seating, which should assist those with long legs.

There you go.
This only becomes a problem because of the forced balkanisation of public services and the gutting of the support infrastructure for the same.

Also an RFA vessel is definitely still a warship and national security exclusions could definitely apply if the MoD chose to have them apply.

It may not be Northern services though. There was talk of the TfW service getting the chop apparently as it terminates into platform 13 at Piccadilly and increases dwell time through the corridor and being revised to work through Victoria (or something along those lines)

Some reassuring news from Trainline:

You may have heard that the Northern franchise will be government-operated as of Sunday 1st March 2020.

We wanted to reassure you that this won’t affect your upcoming journey to Gatwick Airport. Your tickets are still valid.

This is for a journey from East Croydon to GTW. I’d have been very surprised if my journey *had* been affected!

The refurbished ones aren't too bad. It's more the unrefurbished ones (old seated variants) I was talking about.

Oh, I didn't know any that had received such treatment.

Those will be the three car sets that have been used on the York to Blackpool services until last Decembers timetable change and some are now in use on the Hull to Halifax service.

They've been on Leeds-Wigan a fair bit in the last few weeks. The middle car is the one to aim for!

Oh, those.

I had one last week where the seat cushion was completely worn through (as in, I was sat on the plastic base). Need a bit of work in that regard I think.

Some of the 158s that are in use to/from Wigan have seats which are in appalling condition.
Personally, I much, much prefer the new style seats (as used in the 331s and 195s), partly because they're more comfortable - I cannot abide low-backed seats - but also because there is significantly more legroom. If the OLR didn't continue with the full refurbishment programme I think that would be a massive own goal. Passengers want the pace of change & improvement to accelerate, not stall while things are 'stabilised'.

And these are meant to have been refurbished to what northern referred to 'as new condition'?

Even if not refurbished, to let seats get to that low standard is beyond appalling.

There is no wonder that 'northern by arriva' have been removed from the franchised. I just hope the new 'OLR' take swift action to remove things such as this from their fleet.

Does anyone seriously believe that cleanliness will improve when the franchise goes back into public hands? It'll still be carrying the same inconsiderate people.

If you mean the middle carriage of the three car sets, with the beautifully comfortable seats, then removing them is an act of wanton vandalism *

* Modernisation

One thing that pleased me about Manchester Victoria last week was the fact that the new lifts serving platforms 3, 4, 5 and 6 were all working.

Except they’ve changed all the signage around the stairs yet again, so that the direction you’re directed in now sometimes contradicts what’s painted on the risers. Not that anybody cares or follows the instructions
