Hi everyone, this is my first post. I'm an ex DMU driver who left railway in 2002 I'm 49 years old. I got talking with a friend who is a MOM in Surrey and he encouraged me to look into this as a possibility although others have told me it would very difficult to get in. I don't really want to drive trains again so after listening to his thoughts on his job it sounded interesting, would I be better getting into network rail first as an operative? Looking for employment in Edinburgh area any advice would be greatfully received. Thank you.

Family circumstances the main reason, although I did find it very boring and that was the biggest challenge of the job for me.

It's unusual but not unheard of to get into a MOMs job off of the street. You're main problem will be whether an external posting for one comes up near enough to where you live.

You'd more than likely need to get another job with NR to progress into a MOM role. The traditional route is from the signalling grade, though they do take on from the maintenance side as well.

Have you considered becoming a signaller? It’s potentially more sociable than driving, also better paid than being a MOM (depending on grade).

I should have thought driving would be seen as very valuable safety critical experience for the signaller role. Especially as you have first hand experience of life at the other end of the GSMR.

From what I’ve read on here you’d need to look at the NR website for vacancies in your area, apply as an “off the street” candidate and, if successful, you’d be put through the signalling school in York.

Not to be pedantic, but if he left in 2002, he probably used NRN. I may be wrong, but I don't think GSMR started over here until 2007/8 ish.

GSMR is like using a mobile from 2002. Crap signal, pressing buttons to input numbers and letters, sending a short txt and getting a shorter reply! As long as he had a mobile back then, he knows what it’s like to be on the other end of a GSMR! :D

From what I’ve been told by people who remember the old system GSMR is worse than CSR/NRN in some respects - patching you through to the wrong box, randomly dropping out for no apparent reason etc.

Been and gone.
I am sure this discussion of long dead radio systems is very helpful.

Anyway you will not see MOM jobs advertised externally in Scotland. If you want one you will need access to the internal vacancy list and that means getting a job in either Operations or Maintenance first. I would say 90% of the MOMs in Scotland have come from the signalling grades.
