Currently onboard an EMR Meridian on the STP-BDM shuttle run. There's been havoc today as a result of power lines snapping, and everyone seems pretty pressed for resources, especially engineers, train crew etc.

I can imagine that XC's problems are among the worst due to them using other operator's routes and having somewhat of a large network span.

Had to abort my trip to London today. Because of engineering works in the Woking area I planned to travel Overton - Reading - Paddington. 0952 from Overton was 10 minutes late and terminated at Basingstoke. Next advertised train to Reading 11.04 delayed till 11.31. This was confirmed by the ticket office, but another member of staff said they were seeking taxis to get passengers to Reading. They found a coach which departed about 10.40 and arrived Reading 11.25. All trains to Paddington delayed apparently because of OHLE damage east of Maidenhead. But screens began saying Paddington service expected 11.43 and others soon afterwards though staff said no GWR trains and best to get 11.54 SWR to Waterloo. Announcements unclear because of high speed delivery. I decided to return home.

Obviously a very difficult situation, with staff certainly working hard to sort problems as far as they could. I admire SWR's efforts to get a coach. Main problem was communication: the differing information I was given at Basingstoke, contradictory information and gabbled announcements at Reading.

Waverley shut due to overcrowding. Are these people mad ? Probably car drivers who never take the train............

I would expect part of the problem at edinburgh is that scotland isn't being badly impacted by the weather today, Scotrail have not said do not travel and are running a good service all things considered with just localised issues in the vunerable places. As such travelling seems perfectley resonable around here if you have to be somewhere only to get to waverley and find that you are out of luck there is almost no service south.

Personally, I find it disappointing that people have ignored advice not to travel.

Sounds great until you work away from home. I visit my girlfriend on weekends in Newcastle and work in Birmingham during the week (thankfully not for much longer!)

About to start my weekly journey from Newcastle to Birmingham, wish me luck.

Plan so far is coach Newcastle to Leeds, then Leeds to Birmingham via XC. Line blocked south of Derby at present though. :(

The only current noticeable disruption:

Delays Glasgow - Edinburgh
Delays Edinburgh - Stirling/Dunblane
No service Kilwinning - Largs/Ardrossan
No service Port Glasgow - Wemyss Bay

As well as the Far North and West Highland being closed, but in general not much service being impacted by weather

anyone who chooses to make non essential journeys today must be crazy.

Apparently 9G52 11:17 Preston to Birmingham New Street (390001) has been sat behind 1A22 (390138) a Liverpool to London Euston service for approximately 2 hours, reportedly full and standing. 1A22 having brought overhead lines down. Both were reported to be without power, whether this is still the case, I don't know. I think Avanti are using the 2x221 from 1M05 12:04 Preston to London Euston (which terminated at Warrington) to do a train to train evacuation.

Cross City line north now clear. 1S49 Birmingham to Edinburgh (ostensibly) passing Shenstone heading north, 1V83 York - New Street just passing Lichfield southbound. XC website said tree on line. No cross city yet, possibly OHLE not yet fixed?

Haworth station and engine shed under water on the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway. Hope the damage is minimal and normality returns quickly.

That would be understandable until you remember that the do not travel warning for today was issued on Friday when many planning weekend trips still wouldn't haveeft and all of them would have had more than enough time to plan to return home on Saturday.

Were TOCs offering acceptance for Advance holders for earlier travel at that point?

So when did the train companies go out seeking buses/coaches ? 72 hours - 48 hours - 24 hours ??
They didn't, because they planned to run reduced train services on nearly all routes. The amber warning for most of England (bar Kent and Sussex or thereabouts) was at 0943 Saturday BTW.
Avanti's (NR's?) decision not to run north of Preston was taken at short notice.

Also rugby yesterday at Murrayfield - Scotland vs England.

Re tickets for today being accepted tomorrow - given all the reported damage I would be gobsmacked if there is not a similar level of disruption tomorrow.

1V83 York to Birmingham has just arrived at BHM only 13 minutes late, so it looks like you should be OK.

TfW have now posted that the Cambrian Mainline and the Cambrian Coast line will be closed tomorrow, and have posted pictures of Dovey Junction under water and the line at Criccieth covered over the rails with pebbles, also the Conwy Valley line closed, with a photo of the new Llanwrst Canal.

No, rugby fans who chose to come up from London by train rather than flying. There was an England-Scotland rugby match in Edinburgh yesterday afternoon, which wasn’t called off. These people would have travelled up on Friday, or maybe earlier, and now want to get home. There are trains running, albeit much slower than normal, so I think going to Waverley and joining a queue would have been a sensible thing to do this morning.

It is windy here in Edinburgh and was very wet overnight, but not as bad as elsewhere by the sounds of it. The main danger here when it’s windy is pedestrians getting hit by falling slates etc. from old buildings.

On Southeastern a train has hit a fallen tree in the Swanley area and there are reports of another train being damaged between Ashford and Maidstone East.

2V42 undertook a controlled evacuation at Potters Bar due to a tree on the OLE, 50m walk down the ballast in this weather in full kit wouldn’t be fun, let alone in normal shoes etc.

RRBs services between Dundee and Aberdeen have been stood down because the winds are making it too dangerous to operate.

RRBs are still running Nuneaton - Rugby - Northampton but not much else in the area is.

Does it matter whether it was yesterday or not? There are countless other instances of trampolines/dolls houses/whatever else causing issues around the country today.
That picture was not taken yesterday either, I would guess it was from a previous storm.
