Thank you for your comprehensive and interesting replies, it all sounds very well thought out, hope it works ok, I hope to try the service out when bookings open tomorrow.
I have received an email today confirming this:Direct trains from Amsterdam start 30 April. Tickets go on sale 11 February.

We’ve got some exciting news *drumroll please*…
Going from London to the Netherlands and back is about to get easier than ever.
Seats are now on sale for our new direct return trains to Amsterdam and Rotterdam.
From just £35 each way* you can go from the heart of one city to the centre of the other and back again. No airport transfers. No need to get off the train at Brussels. No hassle.
Our first direct return train leaves Amsterdam Centraal on 30 April 2020. And we’ll start departing from Rotterdam on 18 May 2020.
So, you’ll be able to swap Camden for canals, the East End for edam, and black cabs for bicycles without having to swap trains on the way back home.
What are you waiting for?
*Fare is from £35 per person one way in Standard class valid from/to Amsterdam Centraal station or Rotterdam Centraal station to/from London St Pancras International. There are 5,000 tickets available at this price in Standard class. Valid for travel between London and Amsterdam & Rotterdam from 18/05/2020 to 05/09/2020 (subject to change). Ticket numbers correct as of 11/02/2020.
If Amsterdam takes off, as I suspect it will with more frequent services, it won’t be long until it becomes dedicated to Amsterdam, can a oide the Brussels stop, and make it even more attractive. At, say, 3h45 for a direct service, it would take chunks of traffic from the airlines.
Try booking through NMBS Europe, www.b-europe.com. They don't ask for date of birth as far as I'm aware.Just tried to book a Eurostar Ticket for me and a friend but can't do it without a date of birth. Really annoying.
Do either of you not have one? Just kiddingJust tried to book a Eurostar Ticket for me and a friend but can't do it without a date of birth. Really annoying.

The real danger was that I know my girlfriend's birth day and month but not the year. It could be really dangerous to make her older than she is! All sorted now.AIUI, this is an SNCF thing, not a French border force thing. It’s not like API when you fly - that is collected by Eurostar at check in. I’d be surprised if anyone checked the birth date on your booking with the date on your passport. And if you did, say, give an incorrect date of birth, and in the very unlikely event that anyone picked you up on it, you’re u could just claim that the computer got it wrong.

I rely on Booking.com. Last time I was in Amsterdam I stayed at Hampton by Hilton Amsterdam Centre East. Far enough out to avoid city centre prices but not too far out. Three stops on tram 26 from Centraal Station. It really depends on your budget and preferences on facilities in hotelsI have booked out and back STP to AMS ok. Now just need to find a hotel at a sensible cost. Any suggestions? Suburbs would be fine. I am looking forward to it. ☺
It's something to do with availability of Dutch border control staff I think. Eurostar said they will be sorting it shortly.Hi all,
This looks good, as we like Amsterdam and like Eurostar, so I've just checked the timetables. It looks like there are more direct trains going in the London to Amsterdam, than Amsterdam to London. Why is this?
There seems a very social 11.04 departure from London, but only an early morning, and late afternoon departure back from Amsterdam (unless I'm reading the timetables wrong?).
I guess the supplementary question is what happens to the additional Eurostar set that goes to Amsterdam? I guess ECS move to Brussels?
Thanks,

I second CitizenM, though the rooms are a bit weird. Last time I went to Amsterdam I got a fantastic deal on the Element hotel, which is an apart-hotel, so you get a larger room with a kitchenette. Very impressed, and they have free cycle loan. Colleagues stayed at the Old Nickel in the city centre (very close to Centraal station), which is basically a pub with rooms: https://www.oldnickel.nl/en/I have booked out and back STP to AMS ok.
