Lengthening them would require a track layout change wouldn't it
Assuming it's only Manchester Airport that's an issue (which is a reasonable assumption as 11-car Pendolinos serve everywhere else it serves other than Lockerbie which I think has a fairly long platform) they could add a second unit at Preston for the WCML bit which tends to be busier. Preston has the platform space and sidings to handle this.
