Depending on the quality of the refracting body the refracted waves can be degraded and not clearly differentiated

The hint leads me to think of emission spectra, which would tie in with my previous guess of "frequency", though I wouldn't have thought of that from the original question.

That'll do me. They were the names given to lines in the emission and absorption spectra by 19th century scientists. Your turn ...

Sounds like a good night in the local, although not necessarily in that order ;)

Apoplexy - bipolar disorder?
Consumption is tuberculosis
Camp fever - malaria?
Falling sickness - no idea
Brain fever - meningitis?

Consumption and brain fever are correct. No joy with the others.

Eek! I missed that completely! (And then managed to leave this message as an unsent draft.)
apoplexy - brain hemmorage =stroke
Correct (with sincere apologies for the late response).

I make that two correct answers from GusB, and one each from Calthrop, Trackman, and 341o2.

On the numbers game, GusB should have first refusal of the floor.

I'll take the invitation up, if I may.

The elusive species of giant ape-man thought by some to exist, uncatalogued by science, in the Himalayas; is frequently referred to by the name -- in this case, from one of the local languages -- "yeti".

There are similar rumours of similar mysterious giant hairy bipeds in other parts of the world. Please give the equivalent widespread and popular one-word name for such reputed creatures, in:

(1) North America

(2) Australia (per pretty well all orthodox knowledge in all related disciplines, it would seem that this one simply can't be real as a flesh-and-blood creature)

The Flying Wombat, the curse of which was documented in the radio series I'm Sorry I'll Read That Again.
