Break of Journey Advice

I'll shortly need to travel from Aberdeen to Newcastle, where I will spend two nights, before then travelling to Doncaster for two further nights prior to returning to Aberdeen. If I've understood the rules properly it appears that an Anytime Return would allow me to complete this whole journey under one ticket (5 days validity outbound, one month return) and provide reasonably good value for money.

Would anyone be kind enough to confirm that my understanding is correct. If so, is it worth getting the outbound ticket endorsed to avoid any dispute?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

This is fine. There is no need to get your ticket "endorsed" or anything. The rail industry is happy to sell these, and there are no further requirements. It's no different from using the return part of an Off-Peak Return to do the same sort of thing.

I'm not sure that everybody would agree with the concept of that being good value for money. You could probably save a fair amount of money by purchasing separate Advance tickets for each component journey, or even split tickets.

As advised, any Anytime Return would do what you want. However, you would be able to save a lot of money by getting Advance tickets that would commit you to specific trains. There is no requirement for you to get your ticket endorsed in order to break your journey. However, if you know what your intentions are some staff, if you tell them before you hand your ticket over : "I am going to break my journey in Newcastle tonight" my write such on the back.

For flexible tickets if you can travel off peak there is a SMALL saving by splitting and buying 2 off peak returns. All trains northbound will call at Newcastle so there's no restriction with that split for the return leg. But its really only a few quid.

I've not consulted the Routeing guide but it's likely that your return route options would be restricted in having to travel via Newcastle if you went for the split which wouldn't be the case with the Anytime Return.

There are no routes that don’t pass through Newcastle. Aberdeen to Doncaster is map NS only.

My fault for not checking the guide, I'd naively assumed there would be a route involving the WCML.
Possibly historically. It's likely that you wouldn't have to extend the ticket far to include other maps.

Edit : Indeed Sheffield Group qualifies for this although it is horrifically priced.
