"Do I Have A Seat Reservation Stalker?"
I thought I would widen it out... If you can sit in any seat regardless of the reservation
that comes with your cheap ticket why should you bother about being on the correct train or TOC?

The rules do state you should be sat in that seat. The difference is that rules is never(?) enforced.
I assume this is because they’d never get away with charging you more money, unlike if you’re on the wrong train.

The seat you sit in isn't normally enforced but the service you're on is.

I'd booked tickets yesterday for a trip up to London, table, window seat, facing direction, and Avanti had issued an airline seat, not facing, so I didn't use it.
And on the way back I had reservations for the 1843 Euston Birmingham but caught the 1743 with no problems.

You mean the reservation that comes with your "cheaper ticket" rather than "cheap ticket".

I have heard announcements "if you have an advance ticket please ensure you sit in the allocated seat". If this was enforced during any subsequent ticket examination I have no idea, but since many people are reluctant to sit in a seat shown as Reserved (even when unoccupied) I would hope it would be.

XC do like you to sit in the actual seat, but it’s more due to them having so few seats. The whole train becomes one big jigsaw. If one person is in the wrong seat, that means the person in that seat has to be somewhere else, and the whole thing falls apart. If you have a reservation and sit in an unreserved seat then people are reluctant to sit in it as they may get turfed out. This is why they introduced seat selector when booking!

Because apart from the difference between 1st and standard class, all seats on a train are the same price.

Whereas the entire point of operator or time restrictions is because some TOCs want to charge more than others, and they want trains at certain times to be more expensive than others.

On some airlines you can pay more for exit rows, aisle seats, window seats, or seats that are further forward (which sometimes backfires if only the rear door is opened). Often seat reservations on planes will be enforced.
