I’m on the service from Glasgow to Euston and the powers that be have made the decision to classify basically only half a carriage as unreserved. Who makes these frankly ridiculous decisions?

Presumably a 9 coach Pendolino so the unreserved accommodation is carriage C. On an 11 coach it# C and U.

I doubt every other seat throughout the whole train is reserved, so I would just walk through and look for a suitable one, or one where the reserver has finished their journey and it has become available.

Should be mostly 11 cars on Glasgow service ?

What carriages are reserved the heaviest on pendos?

On 9 coach pendolino services C is the only unreserved coach. This predates avanti by many years.
And a rather stupid idea, because coach C also contains the buffet, so has fewer standard class seats than everything except coach A.

Coach F used to be unreserved rather than C. I seem to remember reading on here that the change was to allow more seats to be reserved/sold, but that could well be wrong. It was nicer to have the two standard unreserved coaches on an 11-car (i.e. F and U) next to each other.

Much prefer U , C is a bit dingy

Depends which way round the Pendo loads from. If at Euston I would aim for coach C rather than U as it tends to be quieter, as in my experience people are less likely to walk further than they have to.

Although that only works at the starting station.

As someone who commutes on these, the coaches next to First Class fill up anyway, reserved or not, as people realise they are stood next to First and run down to Standard. It's nice to have an unreserved carriage at the other end where you can get a decent chance of a seat, and a bacon roll too!

I always thought A and B were where advance reservations featured heavily , could be wrong

Who makes the decisions? The other 400 odd people who decided to travel on the Friday afternoon of half term and wisely chose to reserve a seat.

Ok, I reserve a seat and then decide not to travel, I’ve just taken a seat for someone else, seats are unreserved for a reason...

Because no-one has reserved them?
If you choose not to travel, your seat becomes free shortly after departure and anyone can use it.

Yes, but for some reason people won’t sit in a seat even when it becomes apparent that the person who reserved it aren’t showing up

Really? Not in my experience. More likely to be the opposite, i.e. people taking a reserved seat and hoping not to be asked to vacate it.

F and U suggests a rather customer-unfriendly approach!

K is the unreserved first class coach. On some services C F U and K are all unreserved ;)
I think K is only unreserved on 9 carriage sets and on 11 carriage sets I think it is G as whenever possible I always reserve a seat in K.
Also I thought F is no longer an unreserved carriage on any Pendolinos?

Funnily enough I’ve just been on a Avanti train from London to Glasgow. Almost fully reserved. Fantastic to see the train so busy at that time in the morning!

K is a taboo set to sit in, it was tongue in cheek unreserable.

F is still occasionally set as unreserved on some busy services.

As in every seat with a seat reservation?

A few months ago I had a seat reservation on a Pendolino in coach K and despite it being a 11-car, First Class in general was rather busy, so I ended up sticking to coach K. I usually tend to avoid it, although it wasn't bad at all, as the catering staff didn't sit down in passenger seats at all during the journey/didn't loudly talk as they usually do. That was 16:15 Birmingham to Preston on a Friday.

If you're talking about a bunch of regional routes, then maybe, I see that on TPE pretty frequently, but the number of people reserving on long distance London services that aren't on advances is surely minimal

Since LNER have introduced their new fares to Edinburgh I find it more cost effective just to buy a super off peak single...

Almost. In first class at least. The rear coach (K?) was unreserved - and full. I was on the brink of using the tip up seats, but found some that were only reserved from Warrington and empty. Then jumped into some seats that were reserved Euston - Warrington.

I doubt it. Whenever you book a flexible ticket online you're asked if you want a seat reservation. I always get one for the train I'm most likely to get, even if I ultimately end up on a different service.

The point is that the difference in price between walk up and advance on London services compared to anything else is such that it should be a rarity

Ive noticed it fills up by carriage.

normally it starts with Coach A/E, then Coach B, Coach D and Coach F. Coach’s D and F I’ve noticed are the least reserved
