Hi all,

I am in the process of learning how to be an AP whilst being out as the Earthing assistant.
I have seen how cantilever isolation is done but so far I have not seen an AP carry out headspan.
How is the isolation process carried out properly? where do the earths connect to?

Thanks

AP = Authorised person ( in this case Authorised to install the earthing cables to the OLE)

As has been said, sometimes its the span wire to the mast, but also the LDV to the middle span wire. If doing this please make sure that the middle span wire has a line guard (extra wire wrapped around the span wire) before you earth up. If not it can short and strand the wire leading to possible failure

Thanks Steve for your help. I was asking the AP the other day about the protection on RC wires and he said 9/10 you will not see line guards....that thought of well what if there is damage whos gonna cop it came into my mind because your the AP at the DEP and you have followed the correct procedure......would you just contact the NOM and state the concerns?

You'll not see a lineguard on RC or ATF as I don't think they are available, I've never seen one in 7 years as a linesman. (Just found them on OLEMI though) Possibly down to the bigger cross section of the wire and less tension in the wire. As your, more than likely earthing up for overheads work, any concerns are usually passed to the NOM who can then let the OLE supervisor know so it can be checked out.
