On Tuesday, I intend to do the following:

Drive Wigan - Peterborough in time for...

Peterborough 0324
Stevenage 0416/0422*/0445/0502*
Finsbury Park 0445/0504/0523/0552

*I'd like to tick off the Hertford loop in one direction if I've the opportunity. Otherwise a long wait at either Stevenage or Finsbury Park at the crack of dawn will be necessary. Where is better to wait in this case?

*I'm fairly certain the 0422 and 0502 are trains and not replacement buses. Can anyone confirm this or I'll just leave the Hertfood loop for another day?

Finsbury Park 0509/0533/0542/0602
Cambridge 0614/0657/0641/0723

Cambridge 0642/0744
Bury St Edmunds 0721/0823

Bury St Edmunds 0833/1030
Peterborough 0940/1139

I've seen a Peterborough - Finsbury Park and Peterborough - Bury St Edmunds returns at about £19 each with my 26-30 discount included which will overlap at Stevenage.

The only other thing I need to know is a good place to park near Peterborough station from 3am till 12 noon.

What do you think?

Thanks.

The 0416 (0417) is the train you've been on from Peterborough, and is booked to run nonstop via the Hertford loop.
The 0422 is semi-fast via the Hertford loop.
The 0445 is nonstop via the Hertford loop.
The 0502 is a stopper (all stations) via the Hertford loop.

All of these are trains, the 0416 and 0445 Class 700s and the 0422 and 0502 are 313s. As regards to where to wait, I'd recommend avoiding having to wait at Finsbury Park, but then again it is later in the journey than at Stevenage, so would be less of a problem if you have delays there.

Thanks A Challenge. I must have not been fully concentrating on RTT. I had about 8 tabs open trying to work out if times all matched up.

I've not considered doing my route in the reverse direction if the above goes wrog straight away but at a guess the first train out of PBO to BSE would be later in the morning so I'd probably leave out South of Stevenage and try to get around this triangular route as fast as possible.

I take it you couldn't leave after 0330? If you just want the track, stay on the 0324 from PBO to Finsbury Park (arr 0445), then you could get the 0509 from Finsbury Park (arr 0614) and have wait at Cambridge (0642 to Ipswich, arrives Bury 0721), but the next train out of Bury to Peterborough direct is 0833.

It be 717s rather than 313s these days for the Moorgate suburban services :)

Gaty, the Hertford North loop is easier to do at weekends as the services start at Stevenage (no bus replacement services), plus GN/Thameslink have some good value weekend super off-peak fares to avoid the anytime fare (and I would imagine parking at Peterborough is cheaper on a weekend instead of a weekday)

This coming weekend is busy for me so whilst I'm off this week (someone turning 30), it ought to be a bit quieter with half term.

I always like taking the first train out of somewhere distant (to me) so if things start going wrong straight away I can just call it a day that much quicker.

Very impressed with this FLIRT train inbetween Cambridge and Bury St Edmunds. Not sure how it's passed me by. I've never seen one before.
