The ENCTS thread mentioned the 300 Lynmouth - Minehead. This service accepted ENCTS and was all year round.
However Somerset and Devon withdrew support and declared it a tourist route.
It is now a Heritage service limited to peak season only and very enjoyable, except for one fact.
That is only returns tickets are available and walkers often find that very off-putting!! I realise most passengers will do a return journey
Does anyone know of any other services with only return tickets? Seems a strange marketing decision.

It was the case (don't know if it still is) that buses operated by RapidKL in Kuala Lumpur only offer day tickets, no singles or returns. This made a single journey rather costly.

Call me cynical/unethical but since its supposedly now a tourist service can't the operator just sell a single at the return price since the majority of passengers won't know any different?

Hi all,

I thought just a 5% reduction for single tickets would enough. I think the fares are reasonable and would recommend the trip.
https://www.quantockheritage.com/
The timetable and fares for 2020 are not yet on their site yet. I enjoyed the Minehead running day linked from their site last year.
So if you are anywhere near Minehead on 3/5/2020, or during the peak season I highly recommend a trip.

Regards

Hi Geordie driver,

Very good and possibly the reason, as it is a small company and now only has the one summer stage carriage service.

Hadn't thought of that - as although I spent summers as a student and a gap year as a conductor, with United Automobile, Eastern Counties, Eastern National and Wilts and Dorset only Eastern National had day return tickets after about 9:00 Mon-Fri and all day weekends.
Strangely they had time limits on children's fares and these at 2/3 rather than the half of the others companies.

However Quantock used a Setright when I travelled a while ago (don't know if they still do), and these had a stats counter that was often set to the lowest fare 0p or 1p to catch those on the fiddle!

If they don't have inspectors, undercover passengers or CCTV they will lose money.
We had Almex machines when I started in 85, the last non electronic machines. Even then drivers talked wistfully of an old setright machine, it didn't record fares in the 10p to 90p range, drivers used to fight over it. It was not unknown for drivers to have 2 machines.,...

Child fares in North Yorkshire and Lancashire are commonly 2/3 adult fare.

In my local town of Keighley, the cheapest area ticket is not available in child form, so I can reduce a day ticket from £3.30 to £2.64 by buying on my phone, but have to pay £2.10 (Or £1.20 single) for accompanying children.

Until recently Nottingham City Transport only allowed child fares until 2145.

Special services for prison visitors? (If there are any!)

Good call!

There was a Saturday Crewe - Market Drayton (area, can't remember name of the institution) which attracted a 98% female clientele off to visit sons/ boyfriends. Not sure if fares were charged or it was a contract paid for by the Prisons Service.

I recall back in the early electronic ticket machines era a local company firing a few drivers who had been running with 2 modules...
