It could be, but I doubt it. There's likely to be 11 months work for it at GWR and the 144s at Northern will be among the last of the Pacers to leave there so might not be available to soon. GWR isn't in a position to turn down rolling stock in the West with the ongoing Exeter depot building work limiting maintenance capability and therefore fleet availability.I suspect that's not quite the same - they are likely to be insurance write offs and so the leasing company might receive a payout in lieu of the asset that's been written off.
TOCs and leasing companies can agree any terms they like in terms of handing rolling stock back, although often those terms state the stock should be handed back in a 're-leasable' condition.
There was recent comment on here about FGW not removing the 'Flying F' from the seats of Scotrail-bound HST stock and how they would be in breach of agreement. The truth is that the leasing company can choose to waive aspects such as this if it so chose - especially if it means the speedy re-lease of rolling stock that would otherwise be sitting around not earning.
603 will require an engine change, repairs to some door apparatus and four new windows - I'll be surprised if it's not back in traffic by the spring.
