Last nights 18:53 Shenfield -Parkeston SS engineers train returning out of the possession came to a stand between Chelmsford and Hatfield Peverel blocking the down line. GA are reporting a seized wheel set though UK signal maps show the section blocked with TYRE and NOGO. Yesterday evening services were disrupted whilst they were worked over the Up line between Springfield Xovers and Witham. Service recovery was hampered by a loss of power on the OLE for more than an hour between Colchester and Ipswich as well. GA state that the train can not be removed (presumably on a skate) until tonight and as a result the service has been thinned so far this morning. Now that it’s daylight and a proper examination can be made one hopes that there is no damage to the track!

Reduced to 6 skates.
Seems no-one told GA of the plan 2 rescue. Taken 3 hours CHM - SRA as no replacement buses ready (which seems odd as loads at Ingatestone 4 the planned works anyway).

They would have been part of the conference calls so would be aware of the plans. That of course doesn’t mean the busses would automatically be ready when the plans put into place.

It is surprising how quickly the extended journey time to Witham uses up any spare coach capacity, even if there was any to start with. Also Chelmsford now needs to be served by bus too (not forgetting Hatfield Pev). Keeping track of all that without the days of planning this usually requires and doing it on the hoof is not easy.

Coach drivers generally tend to take their breaks with their vehicles too, so not all those coaches you see are immediately available either.

Anyway hopefully it is all working by the time I get to Newbury Park later. :s

Failed train looks to have been the High Output Ballast Cleaner that has been working on the Southend Vic line over the past few weeks. It finally made it to Colchester Goods Loop on skates at 0515 Monday morning - just in time to not affect the morning commute. Wonder how on earth such a beast of a train can be repaired in this area and how long that will take? It was due to work down to Wickford again Monday-Wednesday evenings and between Rayleigh and Hockley at the weekend but I would imagine all of this will be canned now.

Network Rail had been trying to do as much of this work as they could whilst the overhead line renewal project to Southend was in its final stages so it’s unfortunate timing to say the least.

The wagons could be knocked out at Colchester then the rest of the train moved to Parkeston where there are spare wagons. Ideally the damaged wagons would also be taken to Parkeston as they can change the wheel sets and brakes there.

Thanks GB - will be interesting to see what they do over the next day or so - a lot of shunting involved i’d imagine! Have filmed it a couple of times over the past few weeks passing through Rayleigh and it’s certainly an impressive sight.

Sounds like it picked up some VERY big flats somehow. Big to the point of immovable and the first plan was fitters going out with grinders to try and reprofile the wheels at least a little bit.

As GB said some of the wagons were left behind at Colchester and the rest of the consist travelled to Harwich last night. HOBC has been remarshalled and is running again tonight to Wickford :)
