My son wishes to travel on Saturday from Newcastle to Leeds. He then wishes to stay one possibly two nights in Leeds and then travel to Leicester. On the following Tuesday he wishes to travel from Leicester to Newcastle. From my initial resarch it seems a Newcastle to Leicester off peak return might do the trick. Unfortunately the EMR journey planner says that outward break of journey *may* be allowed and to contact them (!). Can anyone let me know if an outward BOJ is allowed? If it is, can the break be for up to two nights, or is it restricted to one? The fare is £74.20 with a 16-25 rail card.

thanks

Does he require flexibility?

If so I would probably go for an off peak return just to Leeds initially

Then from Leeds he can buy the second ticket once he knows the day of travel.

The return journey must be made via Leeds (not Doncaster)

Doesn't that severely cut down on his journey options to get back to Newcastle from Leicester? If I recall correctly it is normally Leicester to Sheffield and then Sheffield to Newcastle.

The problem is that outward BOJ is allowed "if the journey cannot be completed the same day" - but only for one night.
Half the Sheffield to Newcastle direct service goes via Leeds, so it's not too bad.

Thru tickets have 1 of 2 routes, there is no any permitted so if they wanted to return via Peterborough then they'd need a change of route excess.

Interesting routeing farce with tis flow it seems.
