The NRE journey planner is showing XC trains to Bournemouth next Saturday taking longer than usual and omitting Winchester etc., and RTT confirms diversion via Laverstock; the XC website shows this as a late notice alteration. SWR services are still shown by NRE as running normally, and there's nothing in NRE's list of planned engineering works. SWR's site mentions work in the Southampton area on the Sunday (looking at what is and isn't running, it appears that it really is at Southampton, not repairing the damage from the Eastleigh derailment), but says nothing about Saturday.

Does anyone know what's going on? I'm guessing that because of the short notice not all information sources have been updated yet, but if XC can do it you would have thought that SWR and NRE could have too. Are Saturday's changes to do with the permanent repairs at Eastleigh? And is it likely that anything similar will happen the following weekend?

(Normally I wouldn't mind an extra half hour on the journey -- especially with a short piece of rare track and a much longer piece that's rare-for-me -- but I did the diversion the other week and this time I was planning to go to the Isle of Wight, on which journey it would only take a slight further delay to make me miss the hourly ferry from Lymington).

Buses replacing trains in the Southampton area. London trains only running as far as Eastleigh. Looks like SWR haven't updated the schedules yet. Not uncommon for SWR to give out wrong information at the moment unfortunately.

All lines in the Southampton area will be closed all day Sunday for maintenance work.

  • Train services will run between London Waterloo and Eastleigh. Through trains will also run between London Waterloo and Portsmouth via Eastleigh.
  • Fast bus services for long distance passengers will run between Eastleigh, Southampton Airport Parkway and Bournemouth.
  • Bus services for local journeys will run between Eastleigh, Southampton and Brockenhurst.
  • A revised train service will run between Brockenhurst, Bournemouth and Weymouth.
  • Train services will run between Portsmouth and Woolston. All trains will use platform 1 at Woolston and some will need to leave Woolston earlier than normal to make space for the next train.
  • Buses will run between Woolston and Southampton Central.
  • Train services will run between Salisbury and Romsey.
  • Buses will run between Southampton Central and Romsey.
  • Great Western Railway trains will call at Eastleigh instead of Southampton Central. These trains will also serve Chandler’s Ford.

The Lymington Branch train service is not affected by this work.

Please see CrossCountry and Southern publicity for details of their services.

Network rail introduced a late block for the whole weekend at Eastleigh to sort out the derailment. Therefore there will be late alteration with services terminating at Winchester vice Eastleigh.

Can’t really be “all lines closed in the Southampton area” if XC are still calling and reversing at Southampton Central as per the earlier RTT info referred to in post 1.
(Referring to Saturday only - as it turned out.)

These things are often misdescribed in my recent experience. Unless XC are about to be cut back even further yet...

Thankyou for the replies. Sorry if I wasn't clear -- I looked at RTT for Saturday, and I think XC are terminating at Winchester on Sunday. SWR do indeed say here and here that all lines in the Southampton area are closed on Sunday, but (apart from a note on a different page about the temporary arrangements at Eastleigh that have applied for the past couple of weeks), they give no indication of any changes to services on Saturday. The NRE journey planner still seems to show normal SWR services on Saturday. The information about Sunday also indicates that the other 3 lines into Eastleigh will be open, which I presume is now not the case. GWR make no mention of closures on Saturday, and say that they will be diverting via Eastleigh on Sunday (although the NRE journey planner shows buses between Romsey and Fareham). NRE's list of planned disruptions also still has nothing about Eastleigh on Saturday.

In other words, quite a lot of people could be in for unpleasant surprises about their journeys on Saturday (or Sunday if they are expecting to be able to get to or through Eastleigh from the north, west or south-east) -- only XC users who look at XC's own website, or XC/GWR users who check their trains in the NRE journey planner, will know what to expect. This doesn't seem good.

Does anyone know if it is planned to complete the Eastleigh work this weekend, or might there be more to come?

Been being reports that Laverstock will be closed for a while, a month possibly, so XC have nowhere to divert and will have to terminate at Winchester.

What about the Havant diverts? Though that is of course very much dependent on available paths down that way.

I doubt they’d divert via Havant if Southampton is also closed as apparently planned - there’d be nowhere suitable to terminate and reverse. They don’t normally call anywhere on the route between Guildford and Southampton either.

It’s hard to tell, RTT still shows through SWR services on Saturday. I guess we’ll probably find out what’s going on eventually...

Some details on swr journey check for this weekend.

Includes bus replacement between Winchester and brockenhurst on the Sunday. If going London to Bournemouth and west, might as well get a coach!

The hope is that with a sat and sun possession at Eastleigh , the new points can be installed and all booked trains will be able to use Eastleigh from Monday morning in both directions. This is the xtra work. The Southampton all lines block for Sunday was pre planned months back.

Interesting XC ECS on Sunday morning. Eastleigh to Winchester via Havant, Guildford, Reading and Basingstoke. One for the record books... :D
