Well they’ve built the bloody thing now. Surely this kind of thing would be picked up during planning?
No point in having Design Standards if those Standards are not complied with in the build.
A similar situation has arisen at Worcestershire Parkway. I posted a link to an ORR letter signing that one off, albeit with a 12 month (temporary) deviation from Standards, along with other conditions.
The detail will no doubt be different for Market Harborough but the iterative process will be comparable.
Right First Time is of course the aim to avoid such.

And presumably NR and their contractors spent months arguing who was responsible for non-compliance and so would have to pay for the remediation. Lawyers 1 Passengers 0.

Lawyers don’t get involved in this sort of stuff. It’s Engineers, and a no score draw.

Our full length platform 2 is now in operation......but quite why the 5 car train has to stop right at the South end and make the passengers from the waiting room have a walk in the rain I don't know....DSCF7563.JPG

Also, the roof extension to the subway was not installed last weekend "due to the wind"....DSCF7562.JPG
and we await our "Cycle hub" which will be in front of the station building, I am told.

Because drivers no longer have the freedom to stop where they judge to be best but have to obey stop boards?
True but I have seen different position stop boards on platforms for different length trains......ie 8 car stop and 5 car stop positions.

Travelled Kettering - Nottingham and return today so got my first view of the new station.

Utilitarian is the only way to describe it - and I'm trying to be polite!

Does anyone know whether Milepost 83 was rescued from just beyond the north end of the old station up platform and put back in place on the new station, and if so, where it is in relation to the new footbridge? (I assume that 83¼ and 83½ were probably left where they were, if they survived the works.)

Well, the previous incarnation wasn't any better, with effectively no platform canopies. This is quite apart from the functional inadequacies in terms of platform height, length, curvature and accessibility.
For those unfamiliar with Market Harborough (although followers of this thread will have seen many illuminating photographs kindly posted by others) it is worth emphasising that the main station facilities - booking office and cafe - are at ground level in the listed main building and that the covered access ramp and stairs are still around.
Another massive plus is the enlarged and more accessible car park. The old one, taken by the new alignment, was always full and undoubtedly suppressed demand.

Given that you have to stand behind the yellow line, this platforms look to have only about 2 metres width for standing and moving about. That seems very narrow to me.
They have more than the standard width for a new side platform on a 100 mph line, ie at least 2.4 metres. From the planning drawings it’s 3.5m from coping edge to the railings, and about 3m to the lamp posts.

The group standards include the whole width including both sides of the yellow line.

Thanks for the news — have they re-used the Midland post, or have they inserted some rather nasty modern version? (In my view the Midland posts, along with those of the North Eastern and the Caleddonian, were by far the best of the pre-Grouping posts, and those of the Midland were probably the clearest and most visible at speed of all of them.)

I’m not talking about standards. It’s a case of practicality. The area in front of the yellow line is now regarded as a ’no-go’ area so cannot be regarded as circulating space. This means that the effective platform width is more like 2 metres - not a lot of space if the platform‘s busy with luggage, prams, etc. Perhaps the platform should provide a greater circulation area in the centre/ by the entrance.

The footbridge is behind the fenceline of the rest of the platform so there is a section at the foot of the steps and lift where there is more room. From the photos the platform also widens at the subway end, so there is more room there too and there is no platform beyond the subway so no other flow of people there.

Picture, please - if possible. Thanks...
This shows the MP 83 sign....not very historic I'm afraid! This also shows the wider section of platform. In the new large, 700 place car park,DSC00020s.jpg there was ONE car this afternoon.....lockdown is still very much in place in MH.

Thanks for the picture — this makes one wonder what has happened to the old one. Your pictures shew it survived till pretty late on in the proceedings, so it ought to have been possible to keep it and just re-locate it. A pity there aren't tougher heritage controls on the slightly moe obscure items of railway furniture.

Just to finish this thread, there is now a Cyclist "Hub" at MH. They have built a large glass box in the front station taxi/ passenger drop off area. It has space for 100 cycles and is locked with a "Fob" that cyclists can rent/buy/sign for(?) from the station staff. I will get a picture when it stops raining....
The car park is slowly getting a bit more occupied - now about 100 cars with this latest lockdown.
