A colleague has asked me about season ticket validity on this route which requires taking a SouthEastern service from West Malling to Bromley South before changing onto either a Southeastern or Thameslink service up the Catford Loop to Crofton Park

If she held a monthly Southeastern season ticket (or a Keycard), would it be valid on the Thameslink services?

Edit: Just seen that there are only TL trains to Crofton Park at the time she wishes to travel

What do you mean by Southeastern season ticket? What season ticket is it?

Whatever season you have it’s not a ‘Southeastern season’, as that doesn’t exist. It doesn’t matter if you bought it from Southeastern (which I assume you did). It’s valid on any train operator on the route it’s valid.

It would be useful if you could share the exact details though.

Assuming the ticket is between the two stations mentioned, then according to BRFares it is routed NOT VIA LONDON.
There is no restriction of TOC - for obvious reasons these only exist (AFAIK) where there is a choice of operator throughout.

I have already posted the exact details.

The journey is West Malling to Crofton Park, therefore not London Terminals. She will be travelling up in the AM peak and returning in PM peak or later. The journey requires a simple change at Bromley South

Southeastern train from West Malling to Bromley South. Upon arrival, there are only 2 Thameslink trains that stop at Crofton Park at the time she needs to travel (no Southeastern trains stop there during this time).

At work today, I enquired at a Southeastern ticket office. I was informed that the Key was only valid on Southeastern and it wasn't valid on Thameslink. I was told however, that a paper season ticket accompanied by photocard would be valid - however, what happens when paper tickets aren't sold any more?

I last made a similar daily journey in BR days before privatisation. I don't want her to be caught out on a TL train with a season only valid for Southeastern - otherwise I will be heading for the Disputes forum for advice...

Tickets from West Malling to Crofton Park have 'Not Via London' as the routeing. You may use any train company operating a service along any permitted route between the two stations. You cannot travel via London Terminals (e.g. London Bridge, Charing Cross, Victoria etc.).

The permitted routes are:
- Using a direct train between West Malling and Crofton Park
- Taking the shortest route between West Malling and Crofton Park by rail or routes up to 3 miles longer than the shortest route by rail
- A route shown in the ROuteing Guide

Travelling between West Malling and Crofton Park by changing at Bromley South is a permitted route.

A ticket held on The Key between West Malling and Crofton Park is most certainly valid on Thameslink services. The important principle to remember is what the ticket is, the medium it is held on is irrelevant.

I was asking for the exact details of the ticket. Not the journey. In particular I was trying to clarify if it was indeed a route “not via London” ticket. I’m also assuming that it’s a ticket specifically from West Malling to specifically Crofton - Travelcards could also have been a possibility.

Anyway, on the basis that the ticket is from West Malling to Crofton, routed “not via London”, then it is valid on all train operators as I said at first, and as Hadders has also posted.

You were given incorrect advice at the ticket office regarding validity of tickets held on the Key - this is no different from paper tickets. Out of interest, which ticket office was it?

Sorry I misread your post. Yes the type of ticket will be a monthly season between West Malling and Crofton Park only (she is not going to London Terminals). The first train of the day gets her into Bromley South at 06.35 and the next two connecting services (06.42 and 06.52) are operated by Thameslink

I am not going to name the ticket office for reasons of anonymity but it is in south east London

Many thanks for your kind help :)

Fair enough, but you could reasonably inform the TOC, in as general or specific terms as you wish, as a member of their staff has given incorrect information.

.
You were given incorrect information. It's an interavailable fare valid on trains operated by any company.

Please write to Southeastern about this.
