About 8 times a year I travel from Sudbury (Suffolk) to Norwich and have always managed to get advance tickets at around £5 - £6 each way (that is with a Railcard Discount).Sometime these have been purchased the day before.

My next trip is scheduled for Saturday 7th March and there are no advance tickets available, just day returns at £18. I then looked at other stations and Colchester and Witham have cheaper tickets but not Marks Tey or Kelverdon. So I will purchase tickets from Colchester or Witham and get a lift to/rom the station. Saving £8 and actually having a faster door to door journey.

Seems odd to me, I have emailed Greater Anglia with a query an will post their reply..

Hi,

I had a look via the TrainSplit iOS app and found a SUY to NRW advance for £5.30 with Disabled Railcard on 07/03.

You don’t mention in your opening post what Railcard you hold but AFAIK they all give the same discount 33%?.

Try www.trainsplit.com or the app if you have an appropriate device.

Thanks saperstien - I have to travel earlier than that, but even on the earlier train trainsplit is showing £8 single (no split) against GA's £14!

GA's reply to me was the rather generic

"I would like to inform you that advance tickets are route specific and they are subjected to availability."

I have written back to point out that they cannot be route specific if Witham has a cheaper fare than Marks Tey - as the journey uses the same train! I have also pointed out that Trainsplit sells a ticket for an identical journey at a cheaper price.

Have had a "final" letter from GA saying

"I understand your concern is that, advance tickets are not available from Sadbury to Norwich or from Sadbury to Marks Tey. However, they are available from Witham or Colchester. The advance tickets as mentioned are subject to availability from station to station." Notice spelling of Sudbury!

I also followed up the fact that cheaper tickets were available on trainsplit (and indeed National Rail) but they did not reply to this,.

However final point was that I looked yesterday and the tickets are now available from Sudbury and I not have the return journey at £10.60.

As I am not out of pocket with this does anyone think it is worth following this up with the Ombusdman, as others might have been affected?
