Looking to do one in the spring.

I'm going to do the Penzance - Paddington and the Caledonian Sleeper as two over-nights - but are there any other good overnight trains to use?

My list of "stuff" to do includes:

GWR Short Set HSTs
MML HSTs
Chiltern 67's
TPE 68's
Scot Rail HSTs
Oban & Mallaig ( Haven't done for years )

Anything else anyone can suggest?

Chiltern is now 68's.
67's operate in Wales, which could be worth doing. Particularly the Premier Service.
There are also 68's in Scotland on the Fife Circle Line which could work nicely coming off the Caledonian Sleeper.

Personally, I think a 390 down the WCML is something worth doing in daylight if you haven't already done that.

In terms of overnight trains, there are also some on Thameslink and Transpennine but you would have to be quite keen to want to spend a night on them.

It does depend what your particular interests are though

Thanks Iskra - yes I was thinking of the 67 through Wales to pick up the Trans Pennine 68's, also the Caledonian Sleeper for a day or two in Scotland to do the sights ( I forgot about the Fife Circle! ).

I've done the WCML throughout before ( but not on a 390 ) so it may be worthwhile consideration rather than doing another sleeper!

I suppose I'm looking for loco hauled - not sure what the Class 90's are doing these days - I last did an all line about 20 odd years ago so I know things have changed dramatically!

90s on the majority of Liverpool Street - Norwich services at the moment, mixed between 321s & the new 745s.

You can still get 90s from London to Norwich and (perhaps) from May from Euston to Blackpool if the service starts then.

And don't forget the remaining 91s on the ECML.

If you do the sleeper to Inverness you might get lucky with a 66+73 combo in place of the usual pair of 73s.

What is the deal with the caledonian sleeper?

I presume it splits somewhere - in which case whats the traction for the different bits?

Thanks

Depends on the route. Could be just a 92 to the Central Belt, or a 92 then either one 73 to Fort William or Aberdeen. 2x 73 or a 73 and a 47/66 can work to Inverness.

Thanks I’m planning on doing the “up” sleeper to fort William if I get up to Inverness is it allowable to do the down sleeper as far as Edinburgh?

I assume you mean the 'up' from Inverness to Edinburgh, I believe officially you can't board or alight at Edinburgh but am not sure on how this is enforced (particularly alighting).

Try booking it and see what happens!
Well as I’ll be on an all line I could book it for the whole journey and just bail at Edinburgh - but I was thinking that train has probably got space from Inverness to Edinburgh so was wondering if the train crew would let you do that journey or whether they would be mega fussy

They might not release the doors on the Inverness portion. They have to on the Aberdeen portion for passengers transferring from the Fort William seats, but you might be trapped on board as far as Preston

That was my thought too, I'm sure you can't book a ticket to Edinburgh in which case as far as the crew is concerned there shouldn't be anyone needing to alight

Excuse me asking, but does the Fort William sleeper run overnight on a Saturday.
Ah, good point - I presume so but looking the timetable it doesn’t.
I was thinking of doing that move in the Sunday as there is not much else to do on a Sunday.
Back to drawing board!

No, the sleepers only run overnight Sunday to Friday (so no Saturday night/Sunday morning journeys)

I guess what I need to do is work what are good things to do on a Saturday and Sunday as the weekdays are easy as there is loads of commuter stuff that happens. A lot of the HST & Loco Hauled is reduced timetable or non-existent on weekends

You mention TfW 67's, are you planning the Cardiff or Manchester one?

It would be the manchester one - I've just worked out that I can do the evening trip to Llandudno and get back to Stourbridge for a B&B and then the first Chiltern in the Morning...

New Plan as follows:

Thursday - Cardiff - Penzance ( GWR HSTs ).
Thursday Night - Sleeper to London
Friday - Midland Main Line HSTs
Friday Night - Sleeper to Fort William
Saturday - Mallaig to Skye to Kyle of Lochalsh to Inverness
Saturday Night - B&B Inverness or Glasgow
Sunday - Trip down West of Scotland
Sunday Night - B&B Edinburgh
Monday - Scotrail HSTs and XC to York
Monday Night - York for B&B
Tuesday - TPE for TfW Llandudno
Tuesday Night - B&B Stourbridge
Wednesday - Chilterns & XC to Cornwall for HSTs back to Cardiff
