Would taking holiday a couple of weeks after signalling school finishes be allowed/frowned upon?

this will be down to your LOM and when your training starts etc.

mid I was you I would talk to your LOM about when best to take your leave and if this time that you mentioned would be acceptable and fit around your training.
I took a week after signalling school as agreed by my LOM, and started training upon my return.

It’s better to be honest and upfront about when than book then get it denied due to training constraints etc

Week three into week four is the period that contains 6 shifts in 7 days, Thu 12days, Fri 12days, Sat 12days Sun off, Mon 12nights, Tue 12nights, Wed 12nights.

Is it just me or is this roster missing a Sunday day turn 06:00-1800?

Ah my box closes on Sunday mornings at 0600 and doesn't re-open until 2200, hence there being no Sunday day shift.
Goes without saying each location will have their differences but this was just an example of my rota.

Hi desrudy.
Think if you sign into your network rail account and click full list it will show a new vacancy which you have been assigned to. That's what's happened to mine.

Thank you to everyone that has posted on this forum it really is a great forum for all information regarding the signalling role. I am over the moon today as I have been offered a job at WMSC, can’t wait to start and just reading through the contract and other things this weekend!

I know one lad who applied, and got a grade 3 job on his 5th day of employment !

is that not frowned upon by your LOM? They have then got to go out and replace you quite quickly! Or is it more acceptable than that.

Also on a separate note for those interested in general - there is a bit of a recruitment freeze until May. I asked recruitment and it’s unclear how that will affect signaller roles however I’m sure many will have noticed that there is a massively reduced list on the careers site at the moment!

Hi Everyone,
I'm new to this forum. Hope everyone is well on this Friday afternoon. This forum, from what I have read, is really useful in terms of gathering info on what life is like as a railway signaller. I have applied and have passed the initial application and the online tests. It does seem like a really interesting career path.

At our place the level crossing link (6 people) has seen a constant flow of people over the last two years, with only two long termers being in it more than 6 months.

I’ve not heard about a recruitment freeze, no way they can keep that up in the signaller grade we’re so short.

I did find it bizarre almost- how many vacancies were up late last year for such a good job. Feels like a kind of one-off

The reality is many signallers don’t want to move up (the grades into big locations) once their in the door.

So you have a situation where grade 6/7/8/9 jobs have a handful, if any internal signaller applicants.

Recruitment ban on band 1-4 posts until May is on a pre-recorded message on the recruitment call centre. I’m not sure how bands translates into signallers grades though? I had an email today letting me know that one of two basically identical crossing keeper roles had been withdrawn and the other is still running! Luckily I put in for both but I’m now in fear of the other one closing!! Of course I would then still need to get an interview...!

interesting! With everyone moving up the grades?

I wonder how long I can make my location on this f
Any advice or thoughts regarding York signaller school ?
Anyone any idea how many get through the course? ie pass rate?
If you work hard, dedicate time after school hours to study and take the whole thing seriously you will almost certainly pass. If you treat the 3 months as a bit of a holiday, have a few beers after school every day and don't do any revision then you may have some difficulty.

Band 1-4 posts aren't anything to do with signalling grades, and therefore signaller jobs aren't affected by it.

The temporary freeze until June affects non business-critical band 1 to 4 roles only so nothing to do with the signaller grades. It has been brought in to allow managers displaced by the current “Putting Passengers First” reorg to be placed in appropriate jobs. No need to worry about it if you are applying for a signaller role.

I don’t think we’re regarded as bands...?

All crossing keepers moving up into signaller grades proper yes.

After chasing up the recruitment team on a couple of occasions I finally got the dreaded (although expected, given how long it had been) email to say I was unsuccessful for the Cardiff SWCC position. Absolutely gutted to say the least but not going to deter me from trying again.

Still waiting to hear from them regarding the Pontrilas SB position, although I have heard nothing and the closing date was end of December I believe - still sat at test completed. Anybody else happened to have heard back or had any updated re that vacancy?

Back to the drawing board, moving forward I have tweaked my CV in the hope that it stands out more in future applications, its just a matter of waiting until more vacancies go live within my commute area.

Good luck to anybody here who managed to get an interview for the Cardiff position.

I’m sorry to hear that, that’s the right view to take dont give up !

There will be more jobs at Wales ROC over the next year, they may be grade two fixed term contracts initially, but EVERYONE who has been taken on FTC are still here and in higher grade jobs.

That's good to know - will definately be keeping an eye out. I'm not too worried about the grade level, just want a foot in the door and the chance to learn and progress.

I would love to know what I could do different on my CV, as I believe I have skills and experience which are transferable into a signalling role. But I guess it wasn't to be this time.

Will keep an eye on this forum regardless, always something new to learn.

Cheers

If someone else got one more point in the three tests than you did then they will go through instead of you, it’s not just about your CV. I’d say the CV is the least important of the three parts (69 questions, three tests, cv)
