Hi, I recently applied for a job with Network Rail, the advert mentioned discount on a season ticket, are there benefits on rail travel without buying a season ticket?

Not yet anyway... one of the unions I believe is trying to negotiate with the Rail Delivery Group about this.

Weird how Network Rail look after the majority of the railway that the TOC’s get to run their business on yet the staff do not get any concession??

There is currently a deal for some staff who work on Western and Wales to get fifty-odd £6 GWR day passes a year, but that's it.

A union negotiating directly with RDG about what benefits NR can offer? I can't see that somehow even although NR is part of RDG.

No official benefits to NR staff in Wales.

Mag-seven,
I understood that the RMT are talking to the RDG since they represent all the operating companies

I was under the impression that the eligibility of the cheap tickets was extended to (some) in Wales at the end of last year following the changes to the routes, and that it certainly how the website reads.

If you work for an alliance, I believe you get free travel on that TOC’s services? I know people who work at Basingstoke ROC do (or at least did until very recently), get free duty travel on SWR services.

What website?
I know of no-one who works for NR in South Wales who gets any official benefit from any of the TOC's they "support".
Certainly TfW don't offer anything.

As you don't work for Network Rail it's not very helpful you commenting on posts about current events when you don't know for certain.

NR staff on the Wales & Western route have access to a number (per year) of the GWR £6 rovers that GWR staff can also get for friends and family.

I may not work for them now, but I still have friends that work for NR in South Wales who don't seem to know about these "benefits".
I also have friends who work for NR up here who don't get anything (officially)

This was from the rmt website dated April 2019:

In addition we have successfully got Network Rail to agree to make a joint approach to the Rail Delivery Group to achieve our of leisure travel for all Network Rail staff with a view to making this an industry standard. The union has been campaigning on this issue ever since the railways were privatised and this is a major victory on this issue.

GWR have offered Network Rail Western Route staff £6 Rover to tickets for about two years now, this was extended to Wales Route in December 2019 - as a result of the two network rail routes merging.

TfW do not offer any travel discounts or partnerships.

There is a season ticket loan option available to all NWR staff but that’s a normal ticket in effect.

I hope the RMT, NR talks with RDG are positive.

It's scandalous that NR 'new entrant' staff (ie not safeguarded) have been denied travel facilities and also FOC staff.

I feel fortunate working for a TOC, though not safeguarded and the lack of travel facilities on NR and FOCs is a reason I won't currently move despite there being some interesting roles.

Its not as though we didnt know about it when applying/getting jobs at NR, and its been the case for the best part of 25 years. I don't see it happening myself.

No, I agree people knew about it at time, but they probabky didn't know either that TOC staff get pretty good travel benefits.

I'm not overly optimistic either but there are some pretty massive inequalities even between to TOC staff who work together for 30 odd years but because 1 was hired by BR and the other later, the non BR gets zero entitlement in retirement while the BR person stills gets free travel and reduced rate for life together with their partner.

I left a TOC with pretty national coverage of free travel for my NWR job, to be honest I hardy ever used it when I had it so it’s no great loss.

You’ll know all to well when your on the ops side of the railway you avoid leisure travel on it like the plaque!

Travel is a minor thing for me, the pension is my main concern and pay - not to mention in the main pretty good terms of employment.

Would I go back TOC side? Not a chance.

Yeah, I realise that not everyone uses travel. Plenty of BR guys with loads of boxes who don't use them at all :(

I'm sure I'd adapt if I had to but I do make use of it.

You happy to say what job you went from and to as you sound happy with the choice?

Train Guard (14yrs) to Signaller.

I wish I’d made the change about 10 years ago to be honest.

It's nice we've been given the £6 tickets on GWR, but I am envious of the old BR guys who have all the leisure travel as part of their terms!
