Im aware of the plans for them from 2022 but was just saying if there were a few spare they could start introducing them on some West Wales services to Pembroke Dock and Fishguard and get rid of the pacers sooner. The pacers should have been long gone by now, we have had to put up with them for long enough!

Best thing to do would be to ask TFW as you won't get an answer here

Look on the bright side. At least Wales is making good use of them. All 30 Pacers were in traffic yesterday. You could have the Northern situation whereby they withdraw the Pacers and then run shorter trains.

Am I right in saying all of them are in service except 271, which has just been delivered, and 206, which is being used for parts?

I know this is likely a stupid question but why didn't tfw repair 206 rather than use it for parts.

206 will be repaired in due course. It just happens that when a unit is stopped long term it’s sometimes easier to take little items off them to keep other units in service.

For example, something along the lines of:

"Train A needs a new thingy, and it'll take two weeks for the manufacturer to make one."
-"Fine, stick it in the shed."
"Train B failed it's doofit exam. We've ordered another, it'll be here on Monday."
-"Train A's got a perfectly good doofit, and it's sat there doing nothing. Borrow that doofit, and we'll put the new one on train A when it gets here."

So essentially it will be repaired in a few months / years

Could it be the 170 that was being used as a parts donor

I don't know I only seen it passing barnt Green on way to tyseley. Move also on realtime trains. Maybe going for repairs. However move is on realtime trains and it would be great if someone could post this on this thread for me as I don't know how to do it. It was under own power.

Please can someone confirm whether or not it was 170206 (the unit being referred to) that went from Canton to Tyseley...?

A 170 appeared to have failed today at Bridgend. Was in the sidings/start of the branch line to Maesteg. Was meant to be forming the 16xx to Maesteg and return working to Cheltenham Spa. The 17xx service to Manchester picked up the stops for Pencoed, Llanharan and Pontyclun due to the 17xx to Cheltenham being cancelled. The 170 was then returned to Cardiff ahead of the Manchester service arriving. I didn't get the number but it was 2 carriages.

I also noticed the Ebbw Vale to Bridgend was late arriving. Arrival time 1657 but was a good 10 mins late and therefore it held up the GWR service behind it and was also late going back to Ebbw Vale by the time it reversed at Bridgend. Makes me wonder if these extensions of the Ebbw Vale to Bridgend are worth the effort considering the performance risk to the GWR immediately behind. And its not as if there is a shortage of services between Cardiff and Bridgend.

They can’t keep to time from Cardiff > Maesteg at the best of times.

The 1723 Cardiff Central > Maesteg service nearly always causes rush hour delays along the main line.

You see this is why the 170s are not for TfW at all. When they were with GA for a good 20 years, they have had no problems at all apart from minor problems that still meant they could still run in service. But now they are all with TfW, they have had major 'hiccups' causing major disruption, and looking at it frequent runs to Tyseley for maintenance.

If tonight’s 1723 is typical then the delays built up would appear to be predominately down to extended dwell times, rather than point to point timings.

It’s fairly typical - when it leaves Central on time!

It’s funny you say that, it never had any issues with dwell times when ran by 175s on its way from Holyhead - you’d think the dwell times would be better with the door layout on the 170s.

It does lose time between each stop, not just dwell times for me.

I hope it's better up in West Wales when they move here

There is nothing wrong with them, just that they don’t keep to that time and need retiming. :)
