166221 was the first Turbo to reach Brighton in passenger service today following their route clearance. Great Western are running their Brighton services between Brighton and Portsmouth Harbour due to the Landslip between Salisbury and Romsey today

I don’t get why these are not running to Southampton. Dumping passengers at Portsmouth with only a stopping service to Southampton to continue their travels is awful customer service.

Surely any passengers for Southampton would change at Havant for a Southern service to Southampton, rather than going to Portsmouth to pick up the stopper? Although I guess that depends on connections

A couple of questions:
  • What are RHM mods? I've seen them mentioned a few times now.
  • Are the Turbos scheduled to get a new GWR interior? The current seat covers and interior paint work are looking very dated now.

RHM is ride height modifications. They basically fitted shims between the bogies and the bodywork to help gauge clear them on more routes, ie ensure the units didn’t hit quite so many platform edges. Somewhere in the various threads in the forum the exact dimension gets stated, from memory it’s about 20-30 mm

RHM = Ride Height Modification

Spacers are inserted on to the bogie mountings to raise the body of the unit by a small amount to increase platform clearances. This is required for any turbo that is working diagrams off Bristol.

All 166s have been modified and I believe all 165s bar

165102,103,109
165121,123,125,126,130,133,136

Modified units are identifiable by yellow triangles below the cab window,

Would appreciate a couple of updates:

Is the one 166 (204?) still at Reading?

How many 165s have moved to Bristol? Presumably no more to move until the 769's are in operation?

Yes, 204 is still at Reading.

There are still 26 165s at Reading (10x 2 car, 16x 3 car) although 165130 is over at SPM for C4 work.

Is there likely to be a mini cascade of turbos (2?) back from Bristol to Reading to cope with the increased number of North Downs diagrams from the May timetable change?

There isn't going to be an increased number of North Downs diagrams from May. The service stays 2tph (but with a substantially worse timetable) until the 769s turn up.

The extra trains are now shown in RTT as 'unadvertised express'. That means the stopper runs at xx20 from Reading with a layover at Guildford and the semi fast at xx01. Quite why the trains run on the other side of the hour from the current timetable and break established travel patterns isn't obvious.

In reality a substantial part of the May T/T will be the emergency 1tph timetable anyway.
