On the GN side we of course have an 8-car diagram on the Cambridge to Brighton service, which just happens to hit the peak flow going into and coming out of London. So peak passengers don’t need unplanned short forms, turn up at a particular time and it will be an 8-car 100% of the time!

It doesn’t seem uncommon for 8-cars to turn up at weekends during altered working, either planned or otherwise, on what are theoretically 12-car routes.

Apart from the single planned 8-car diagram, I find the other 10 (of 11) Cambridge-Brighton diagrams are quite dependably 12-cars on weekdays.

And the 12-cars on Saturdays are quite helpful in avoiding the crushed - even at 12-car length - King's Lynn/Ely fasts on a Saturday morning.

If Welwyn - Sevenoaks starts in December that's even fewer services for platform 3 at Blackfriars. I'd have thought this central city location would have warranted a 15 minute interval service during the peak. I'm amazed at the moment it has only the half hourly service to Sevenoaks and that's only an 8 car unit. Perhaps the inability to reach London Bridge from the bay platforms limits route options.

Was it not the case that at least one of the bays was effectively provided for a service which in the event is not using them - that service being the Sutton loopers? That would have presumably accounted for at least 4tph.

That’s right as they were meant to be used to provide a Sutton service but as we all know, that died quickly when politics got involved....

Nothing on the Elephant route is 12 car, unless you go fast to Bromley South, or take a slow routing to East Croydon. Elephant itself can't hold them, even.

It can't even quite handle an 8; the rear doors are off the platform.

Originally it was envisaged that there would be 14 trains per hour via Elephant and Castle in the peak (according to the 2011 RUS study)

Through Services (all via Catford)

2tph Maidstone to East to Welwyn (all day)

2tph Sevenoaks to Luton (all day)

2tph Bellingham to St Albans (all day)

Bay Services (all via Herne Hill)

4 tph via Tulse Hill (all day)

2 tph Stopping Service via Kent House (peak)

2 tph Medway Towns (Peak)

Update on the Maidstone East services from the rail minister:
https://www.theyworkforyou.com/wrans/?id=2020-02-27.22006.h

Unfortunately, introducing the Maidstone East Thameslink services onto an already busy and complex railway network is not yet possible without seriously compromising reliability of existing train services that thousands of passengers rely on every day. Several issues are currently preventing the introduction of the service: on top of timetabling constraints, rolling stock availability and stabling facilities are issues that need to be solved. I can assure my Rt Hon Friend the industry is working hard to resolve these and provide passengers in Maidstone with more frequent services to the City of London as soon as possible.
