It doesn't. The destination panels and roof ends on Provincial livery were yellow and black, and units such as 142005 never wore that scheme as they were delivered in GMPTE orange livery..
They all had the destination box in black with a yellow rim, from new, up until they recieved FNW/NS/ATN livery; Wales & Borders, and subsequently Arriva Train Wales, were the only operators post privatisation to retain the original style

142090 is in the usual place on Newton Heath (Thorpes Bridge end, #1 Holding road which is the nearest road to the Rochdale lines) where 142s waiting to disappear are kept.

Not sure if that means anything. It was there with 2 others a few weeks ago however they all moved out and ran services since

True yes, that siding was & is routinely used for other stuff but there were plenty of other roads 142090 could've been stabled on instead, and knowing the method of work on NH I'd say the odds are that its location there is more likely to be ominous than not at the moment.

142090 had a small run to southport and back last Thursday. But didn't do much last week either. Out off the six is it possible that 142090. Is known as a reserve only out off the six. Ie the one off the two always spare.
But iff used now doesn't go far say will do a odd trip kirkby and back only. Ie am or say maybe Friday pm southport and back only ie really limit ed mileage. Or will be it be five. Left 142090 has gone. Or even less in March very soon when the 769 cascade comes in on the alderley edge services. However maybe 142090. Is restricted use ie odd kirkby one trip am maybe and all it can do.

I've no idea to be honest, there might be reasons why a certain unit is used less than others but it isn't necessarily the case with there being such a small pool of them left.

Since the 142s have left the North East. The Heaton based 156s have become the norm. These units used to wander over to the NW. Is this still the case or does Manchester now see very few Heaton based 156s? The ex Scotrail ones hardly seem to venture away from Newcastle and Middlesbrough and are seen most days in the area.

156s are rare. I always hope for riding one or a pacer. It never happens

142096s destination blind
Brilliant! So the northern pacers have covered east to Cleethorpes, west to Barrow, south to Nottingham and north to errrr Dumfries? Why and how Dumfies? :D

Anyway I noticed Wakefield had both its stations listed individually on the blind but poor old Bradford with 2 stations has to make do with just plain old Bradford.

Those chunky yellow on black fonts look great there, stick them behind 30 years of filth, wear and tear on the front of s pacer and they were barely legible. Did any ever get electronic destination signs?

Hadn’t noticed that  northern don’t know there own stations!

Well everyone makes spelling mistakes...(It's their, not there)

Interestingly there is a Marsten and also a Marsden on the blind. Perhaps Marsten had some secret meaning like Inspector Sands...o_O

Thought some of you might like to read this. The Bradford Telegraph and Argus has a piece on the KWVR acquiring a pacer for preservation.

https://www.thetelegraphandargus.co...s-bradford-district---not-controversial-move/

A rail line in the Bradford district is set to run Pacer-operated services long into the future, it has emerged.

But passengers on the Calder Valley line into Bradford Interchange need not worry, for the only place a Pacer will be found running locally in the years to come will be on the district's popular preserved railway.

The Keighley & Worth Valley Railway has announced that following 34 years of service on the local railway lines of West Yorkshire, Class 144 ‘Pacer’ Diesel Unit number 144011 will be transferred from Porterbrook Leasing Company, current owners of the Class 144 units.

The Class 144 ‘Pacer’ unit will move to the railway's base in Haworth following its retirement from operation on the national rail network with Northern, currently expected to be in late May.

Matt Stroh, chairman of the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway Preservation Society said, ‘Offering a Pacer a home on a West Yorkshire heritage railway is very fitting, because these units have been the mainstay of operation in the area for over three decades. We are very grateful to Porterbrook Leasing for giving us this opportunity.’ Rupert Brennan Brown, Porterbrook’s Head of Communications and Engagement, said: “We are delighted to be able to support the KWVR by donating a Class 144 Pacer to their operational fleet. These trains were in many ways the saviour of the social railway, so it is fitting that one of these multiple units will continue to serve Keighley, as well as communities along the Worth Valley and visitors to its world famous railway.”

The Class 144 DMU was designed as a lowcost solution to the need to replace some of the original first generation diesel multiple units, dating from the 1950s. It was designed and built by British Rail and Walter Alexander in 1985 and introduced to passenger service in 1986. The Class 144 was delivered new to Leeds Neville Hill depot, and soon took over operations on the Airedale Line between Leeds/Bradford and Skipton and was the mainstay of the local services through Keighley until electrification in the late 1990s.

After electrification they continued to be regular visitors through Keighley, mainly operating the Leeds – Skipton – Lancaster service, something they could still be seen regularly operating until December 2019. Class 144 units have spent their entire working lives operating local services throughout West Yorkshire and can often be cited for re-invigorating declining local services and supporting the re-opening of many local stations after they were introduced.

Tim Moody, from the KWVR, said “We believe that the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway is an ideal home for a Class 144. We appreciate that our wide variety of steam locomotives hauling period carriages will continue to be the main attraction for many visitors, but we also recognise that preservation and history does not standstill or stop at a set point in time. What is considered modern and maybe unloved today is tomorrow’s history and heritage.”

“With only 23 Class 144s ever being built, and having worked in West Yorkshire their entire lives, they are an important part of the story of rail travel in our local area and we believe that with suitable interpretation it will become an interesting and valuable asset which visitors, young and old can continue to ride on and experience, now and in the future. The Class 144 will further the objectives of the Society and I believe will attract new visitors in the future, especially younger generations, which is vitally important for working museums such as ours”.

So Pacers were never meant to go to Glossop, Hadfield, Dinting, Broadbottom, Hattersley, Godley, Newton for Hyde, Flowery Field ETC.
How many of those are stations where services terminate? Surely the blind only contains terminating stations.

Not necessarily. They won’t have been to Nottingham for a start.

It’ll be a standard Northern DMU blind. The same list will probably have been found in other Northern DMUs that had roller blinds.
