Good evening. All being well I shall be meeting a tour group at Alnmouth Railway Station later this year. My train however gets in about 1100 hrs, two hours before the rest of the group arrives. Does anyone know if there is a cafe or pub on, or very close to the station,? Otherwise I presume I would have to get a taxi into Alnmouth Village or Alnwick town which would then become expensive for a return trip and by the time I got there, there would not be much time before going back to the station. I don't think the buses are very frequent, or how close they stop to the station. Many thanks.

If you have 2 hours, then you do have time to stroll in to Alnmouth (there is a footpath) Nothing really close to the station unfortunately.

If your train is on time, you can make the X18 bus, but the stop is a 10 minute walk towards Alnmouth, which is about half way there

As long as the weather isn’t too bad it’s a generally downhill walk to Alnmouth and maybe a taxi back up. Nothing close to the station I’m afraid

It's just over 1 mile to the Red Lion in Alnmouth, call it 20 minutes, so you've got plenty of time to walk both ways and have a couple of pints. It's only *slightly* downhill on the way there so it's no big deal on the way back, unless you've got mobility issues. It's about 5 minutes, 1/4 mile further to the beach, so you could see the sea and still have a pint on the way back. I did something like this last year but I think I had 3 hours.

I once met a woman who ran a coffee van at the station. One of those little three-wheelers or similar with an espresso machine on the back. Probably peak times only though, she had another job elsewhere.

Ok, thank you for this info, if only a 20 minutes walk to Alnmouth village, then that's not too bad. Is the foot path as mentioned above well signed at Alnmouth Station?

I expect the footpath being referred to is the normal roadside path, rather than a “public footpath”. Leave from the up platform side, when you reach the main road by the overbridge you should see a road sign for Alnmouth. Before you reach the roundabout you’ll be able to see Alnmouth in the distance; I’d also reckon it’s about a 20 mins walk.

If you put Alnmouth Station into Google Street view you can do a virtual walk into the village.

Walk to Alnmouth itself is alongside the road, so easy to follow. And good choice of pubs for a pint. Bit uphill on the way back.

Coffee van seems to be there for the morning peak ... welcome cup of coffee at dark o'clock and they are always cheerful.

Previously I'd have recommended the Coach Inn in Lesbury as being slightly closer to walk to but unfortunately it closed down last year.

The walk is just on the side of the road all the way down to Alnmouth but there's a lit tarmac footway so its easy enough. Once you cross the River Aln you can turn right and follow the riverside path if you want a bit of variety but its a slightly longer route assuming you're wanting to end up at the Hope & Anchor (if you want to eat) or the Red Lion (if you just want a drink).

Downhill from the station, straight on at the island. Can't miss it.

I have seen a coffee van there. No other facilities except a waiting room. The town is a bit of a walk but is very nice.

It's the choice of pubs that attract me. :)

I go for a weekly dayout to Alnmouth.
The coffee van in the eastern carpark by Platform 1 is open for communter/morning passengers until about Noon. In the summer it has extended hours depending on demand from daytrippers/ holiday makers. It serves hot snacks (butties) as well. It is literally 10 yards from the waiting room which is open all day. There is a disabled toilet for all passengers! The key is at the ticket office.
Going into Alnmouth is 20-30 mins walk along surfaced paths. There are 3 cafes & as many pubs. Alnmouth village is a Victorian & older gem!!! Beautiful sandy beach, estuary & bird life. Giving away my secret place!!

If you're approaching from the south, look out of the train towards the village in the last couple of miles before the station. The village and estuary make one of the best views out of a train window anywhere in the UK, it's stunning on a sunny day.

Last summer we had an excellent room & meals at the Schooner. The new owners are working hard to improve its reputation.
When did the new owners take over (it helps to know this to make sense of the reviews)?
There seem to be quite a lot of very bad reviews *after* last summer.

I was staying in Alnmouth last June. Unless there has been another change of ownership in the past year, the place has been owned by the same family for a number of years, but for a while they had someone else managing it. The downstairs bar area has been done up, as have (I believe) some of the rooms, but it appears there is a lot left to be done. It’s a shame, as Alnmouth is a very popular destination, and The Schooner could be a real asset to the place, given the right level of investment and commitment.
