Hello,

The Sheaf and Porter Rivers Trust are applying to Network Rail/East Midlands Railway to replace a wooden access cover with a steel grate and add some information boards to where the River Sheaf and Porter Brook meet under platform 5a at Sheffield Station.

Someone raised an interesting point. Several UK railway stations are built over rivers or streams. Is anyone aware of a similar project elsewhere?

Are these the same people that wanted to paint the platform blue last year?

So that's where Porterbrook gets it's name from. I never knew that!

Southampton Central also has a hidden river (although only really a stream) flowing underneath it.

There's an up to date video of the tours we run if anyone wants to see fully under the station. The more impressive 'Megatron' arch is away from the station at Exchange Street and was designed to carry trams over the river.

Is the wooden hatch in bad repair or easy to breach? If it is you might have more luck suggesting a modern "secure" access hatch such as a grating ;)

Network Rail / East Midlands Train are already supportive of converting it from wood to metal grating.

We're currently in the long paperwork stages but the design has been accepted in principle (I think!)
It's removable so it can still be used as an access point.
