I'm sure on previous visits I've seen sections of the Meadowhall branch with a speed limit of 50mph, and possibly also on parts of the Halfway branch. But on a visit today covering all of the Meadowhall branch and part of the Halfway, I didn't see anything higher then 40. Have they taken the same backwards move made by Croydon and Nottingham and reduced their top speeds, or did I just not notice it today?

I believe you are right in that speed limits lower than the "system" max (50) have been applied since opening - possibly everywhere except on the (new) NR section between Rotherham and Parkgate.
