These hipster terms get used / brought about because some PR firm has been paid £millions to come up with the guff. If the management spent money on tangible stuff that actually improves the service, they would do everyone a favour.
Never a truer word spoken! Serco will, at some point, depart the sleeper and hopefully whoever runs it can consign these terms in the dustbin of history :)

I like to think that the pretentious terminology might soon be scrapped, and a spade called a spade by the management once again! The crews probably have no interest in using it because it seems pompous and prissy (and not at all ’railway’), whereas ’first’ and ’standard’ are universal across the industry, and the sleeper had a ’lounge car’ for nearly 30 years before anyone felt the need to rename it. I have also heard instances whereby passengers with ’club’ tickets were, at least initially, refused access to the Euston first class lounge because they didn’t say ’first class’ on them. While I hope that this has now been rectified with staff training, it does go to show the issues caused by non-standard terms (and why they’ll never endure).

I'm not sure what stories you were hearing, but the "Club" ticket I was issued recently has "1st class" on it.

It would seem odd for that to be a new addition when it would be much easier just to say to staff "You know how we let Caledonian Sleeper passengers in? Make sure it says "Club" or "Double" on their ticket".

All this time I've been following the sleeper information and I didn't realise that's what club and classic meant.

It may just be a particular kind of e-tickets that were causing difficulties- I have an e-ticket for a journey to Fort William on 1 April which simply says ’fixed club solo room’ without making any mention of ’first class’. This is interestingly one of the e-tickets which calls a berth a ’seat’- I believe that these are known issues with the formatting of these tickets and that they will be rectified in future (if they have not been already). What you say about club/double makes perfect sense though (until the sleeper operator does the sensible thing and ditches those terms that is).

I hope so. I love the Mk5s but Serco’s fancy PR-speak drives me (and all the front-line staff it would seem) up the proverbial wall. There was nothing wrong with ’first class’ and ’standard class’ and everyone knew what those terms entailed. They need to concentrate on the basics and call a spade a spade.

Neither did I. And its all meaningless rubbish - how does one decide if club or if classic is the posher accommodation ?. Mind you I would just get the cheapest.

There are pictures and descriptions in the booking process. Much better than other booking engines where you have no idea what you are getting...

Can you imagine a photo of a stuffed voyager on the XC site
Ahh, but I fear, does one really get an idea of what one is actually going to get !.
Maybe photoshop in some out of order notices on the shower etc.!

Although... other booking engines don't have the luxury of (somehow) getting away with selling tickets for their own services only and not even offering connections - so not an entirely fair comparison!

The old terms had their own problems. If your company didn't allow first class travel and you didn't want to share with a stranger you couldn't use the sleeper. I think it is a good idea to use different terms for berths as opposed to seats, although I'm not sure Club and Classic are ideal either.

Does anyone know why 1M11 was diverted between Wigan & Crewe (via Manchester) this morning? Saw it coming through Platform 13 at about 4am this morning after I had dispatched an ECS on the main station.
Further overnight repairs to the landslip at Dutton viaduct. Both Lowlanders diverted via Chat Moss/Manchester last night.

All sleepers were diverted that way Sun and Mon night too and Lowlanders on Tue night as well.

Sharing with a stranger in standard was abolished well before the new stock arrived, though. I think that sharing was discontinued in October 2018 if I remember rightly, when the classes of travel were still called first and standard. To be fair, even in First Group days you could pay the standard solo supplement which allowed you to use a standard class berth without needing to share with a stranger. I can imagine that the only people who routinely bought this were those whose businesses would not allow first class travel, as the standard berth ticket with the solo supplement was often just as expensive, if not more expensive, than a first class ticket, without any of the benefits of first class.

I bought one once on business, the reason was that I could use a saver return as the main ticket but still get the room to myself. Company policy would have allowed first, but there’s no way I’d have got away with expensing a full price open single for the day train. Advance wasn’t an option as I couldn’t be sure when I’d be heading home.

Another opportunity to update the formation record based on analysing information from gen group postings made this morning.

Since this was last updated, we had the night of 21/22 February when the Fort William sleeper did not run due to flooding and the damage to 15326 on the night of 25/26 February. The upshot of this is that CS01, CS06 and CS08 have switched their "Fort William" coaches. 15326 appears to have been replaced by 15204 so that both CS06 and CS08 are running two 152xx PRM sleepers. 15104 appears to have made its first appearance in a full set rather than operating to Fort William.

15312, 15326 and 15340 appear to be out of service. 15001, 15301, 15302 and 15336 haven't appeared in service yet and presumably the next swap of Fort William coaches might be to 15004 and 15101.

Are 15210-15304-15206 running the wrong way round?

Many thanks JonathanH. Are 15001, 15301, 15302 and 15336 visible from trains passing Polmadie, and whereabouts are they parked?

15312, 15326 and 15340 appear to be out of service. 15001, 15301, 15302 and 15336 haven't appeared in service yet and presumably the next swap of Fort William coaches might be to 15004 and 15101.

Are 15210-15304-15206 running the wrong way round?
Thanks for sharing.

Gen I saw had the FTW portion on 1S25 (1Y11) as still in the previous order of: 15206-15304-15210.

15340 still not back in service after its whack from 73969 at FTW in early November. 15326 was still in the siding at Tulloch last I heard (a couple of days ago).

Weren’t needed in the end.

1S25 (92014) ran as normal pretty much and got through before the possession.

5S96 (92043) then followed it (north) out of Wembley direct to Bushey - again to get through before the possession. It waited until all the WMT units had finished reversing before pulling into the station. Eventually left Watford 68 Late. Right Time at Glasgow and Edinburgh though...

That makes more sense, I will amend the post.

Is anything specific wrong with 15312?
There was an attempt to move a Mk5 last Tuesday to Shields TMD (which is usually for tyre-turning) however it never made it very from Polmadie in the end. Possibly 2+2 = 5, but that could've been 15312?

8Z73 move tomorrow to recover 15326 from Tulloch to Fort William Junction Yard... presumably for road haulage from there?

Thanks JonathanH, very useful information there.

Lets hope 15104 stays in the main set.

Any conjecture on the, currently five (?), unused coaches. I imagine the summer peak demand will push them out into service although the current formations are very seldom short formed and there is no possibility of longer formations. Can only hope that maintenance requirements will mean some of them get used. Risk is that some of the coaches might have been robbed of too many parts to keep others going. Also quite likely that the unused coaches are a long way behind on modifications (apart from damaged 15340 maybe). Then it takes a major problem with a coach in use to force a swap. The damaged coach 15340 is quite possibly a Christmas tree already. I have felt this happens with new fleets where not enough spares were bought. Of course it also happens with old fleets.

Yes, I remember 466036 being used as a Christmas tree for the other Networkers - in the end I took a trip to Slade Green to see it, not really expecting to catch so much as a glimpse, but when I went to the depot, the foreman assigned someone to take me to it. To say I was pleased is something of an understatement. Those were the days!

Oh gosh that was so many peoples' nemesis unit !.

Yes I remember circa 1976 being shown round Selhurst. Another welcome was at Gateshead which was apparently Fort Knox !. As for Stewarts lane I distinctly remember hearing "OUT" as only one of my feet passed between the gate posts !.

Oops off topic. But I can see 15340 only getting back into service if CS are VERY desperate.
