Seriously, I love Glasgow. Bloody fantastic. I'm here a lot (including right now) and it's a wonderful, proper big city with proper neighborhoods and architectural heft in the centre. Very pleased to see Queen Street station come on in the way it has.

Has a big city feel like Manchester or Leeds , the City Centre is similar to them , the inner city tenement areas do not however .

If you’re looking for dense, vibrant tenement areas check out Finnieston, Partick, Hyndland, Hillhead, Kelvinbridge, Woodlands, Shawlands, Govanhill, Battlefield, Pollokshields, Strathbungo and Dennistoun.

Yeah , though the Southside is my favourite , i dont always feel its virbant . Mount Florida is a good example. West End is in the summer , though i find its people from Up north that tend to stay there.

Crikey! I could only imagine the chaos with people coming in on peak trains and the long distance services boarding at the same time.

The west and east gatelines were open as advertised but people still trying to get through the centre I believe. All seemed fine by mid morning but from what I hear there were other problems with the number of people who arrived without a ticket for a variety of reasons causing long queues.

Even when everything's functioning arriving passengers have a tendency to cram into the section of gates closest to their platform at Queen Street. Unless it's very quiet I always divert and overtake most of them. I wonder if there's anything that could be done to encourage people to spread out a bit?

First sight of Queen Street Station without any wooden hoardings this morning. Looking good!

With the 398 shuttle bus sneaking in for good measure lol

With the hoarding gone, one gets a better idea of how it'll look when everything is done. May be a tad garish and it may not weather all that well, but considering what was there before, it's a vast improvement. Looking forward to it finally being finished. :)

I saw Kelvinbridge for the first time last year and Hillhead for the first time a few weeks ago.
They are the only bits of Glasgow I've seen (and seen a lot of it) where I said to myself, I would be happy living here.
Disclaimer: I could live in other parts, but I don't think I'd be as happy as I would in Kelvinbridge and Hillhead.

Mostly Glasgow-ish. Mostly.

Hillhead means you could also treat The Chip as your local. Happy times!

Back there weekend after next, looking forward to getting this new view and a look around inside.

The transformation of the east end of Glasgow as well as Drumchaple, Castlemilk and Pollock is the great unwritten story. I am not joking when I say that I would recommend anyone to cycle through these areas if you want to see real transformational change. Doesn't get the headlines though.

I too am looking forward to the new Queen Street Station.

The night view is interesting, though there is still a lot of clutter along W George St and inside the the station at the moment. Indifferent photo from street level (seagull had gone to its nest):

The frames look quite good at night but I think broken up nature spoils the effect

Quite desirable places to live , never get the impression that many locals stay round there though. Southside is nice in parts too.

I’ll withhold final judgment until we see it finished but I think it looks like it will be pretty gorgeous. The aspect onto George Square in particular is going to be so much better than the old taxi circle.

As for the idea of getting rid of the vaulted roof you’re completely wrong there. It’s lovely.

Agreed. In fact when the old grey eyesore building that had obscured the station was removed the people of Glasgow were left wondering why the old trainshed was hidden away for so long. It would have been a travesty if it was removed.

Looks much better with the white text. According to @NetworkRailGQS there are 12 screens replacing the previous 8 and using 30% less power. And the old ones to be removed later this week.

There's a short video on @NetworkRailGQS as well. Unfortunately, I can't imbed it.

Does anybody know what the far left panel with the Scotrail sign below it will be used for?

New additional screens being fitted “railside* (behind the gatelines) yesterday which may please some of Twits who have been moaning about the new main display:

 Thanks, scotraildriver!
I didn’t even notice these were screens – I thought it was more black cladding. Clear to see now that you have pointed them out! Here’s another couple of views of these A-Z screens near the new booking office:

The twits have been moaning because they're now forced to remain outside the barriers until the platform is announced. This stops then being ignorant sods as they block the area just inside the barriers while they wait for their platform. I had hoped that it was deliberate design change and that other screens would also be placed to ensure this will continue to be the case.

It is deliberate for those very reasons and has proved to have worked! No one hangs around the barriers now.

Fair enough if that's the plan.

I'd hope that this goes along with a change to Queen Street's practice of withholding platform information until a few minutes before departure, though. I know quite a few people who wait inside the barrier not to get a head start, but to avoid the scrum around the barrier as a trainload of passengers try to board in three minutes. It's also daft to force passengers coming up from the low level platforms to pass out through the barriers to find out which platform they need to go to in ten or fifteen minutes.

They won’t have to – the new screen I pictured in post #1190 is marked High Level departures, as can be seen in the 2nd photo.

Unfortunately that's not going to change. Turnaround times at Queen St are typically very tight and platform info isn't shown until the cleaners have had a run through the train. It's nigh on impossible to do a clean with passengers on board so that's why it's not announced earlier.

I thought that they had travelling cleaners, at least on the Edinburgh to Glasgow trains.

Perhaps it's a symptom of ScotRail not having enough units or staff to run the timetable it's trying to run. With sufficient units/carriages and staff it should be possible to run the timetable with a bit more space in the turnarounds. That's a discussion for another thread though.

Update 48 now released. You can watch it in your bunker as many times as you like over the next few months after you've finished watching all your boxed sets and reading War and Peace and the Bible (which will do you more good  )

Probably the last update for a while and quite possibly my last altogether as I'm one of Boris's expendables. (What colour is a hi-risk vest? :| )
