I know network rail prefer to use a bridge instead of a LC, and I am not talking about upgraded crossings but what is the newest crossing on the network and does anyone know when it was installed?

Not necessarily new but the one at Norden on the Swanage Railway was automated a couple of years ago with wig-wags added.

As for the newest build, I’d say the one on Newgate Lane in Fareham (c1983).

Don’t know the answer, but both the Littleport bypass and Downham Market Bypass LCs were opened in the late 80s IIRC.

A level-crossing was provided across the new A483 Oswestry by-pass in 1987 for the Blodwell Quarry line (the stub of the Cambrian Oswestry - Welshpool main-line). This traffic promptly ceased in 1989, but the rails have remained in place ever since. The Cambrian Heritage Railway's long-term plan is to reopen it; it will be a challenge on what is a very busy, fast and wide road.

The Wainfleet bypass L.C. on the Skegness line was mid to late 80's in my opinion.

A manual level crossing was built in 2001 for the construction of Deganwy Quay on the old docks site in Deganwy. It was removed in 2004 when a manual crossing dating from the 19th century 200 yards away was rebuilt as an automated crossing. The road side barriers of the 2001-04 crossing are still in situ, somewhat bizarrely they weren't removed when it was re-fenced.

Is it possible there are more recent ones on the Welsh Highland Railway?

Bicester eastern bypass opened around 1990ish, is that when Charbridge Lane LC was built?

There’s also the Wallingford bypass LC built around mid 1990s? Unusual in that AIUI Network Rail maintain it for Oxfordshire county council, although it only crosses the Wallingford and Cholsey heritage line.

When was the line to the Ford engine plant at Bridgend built as that has a level crossing?

I'd consider the Porthmadog cross-town link to be a level crossing of sorts, it has wigwags I believe...

The aforementioned cross-town link included the major level crossing on Porthmadog's Britannia bridge, and also a set of wig-wags on nearby Snowdon Street. That's all on top of the mixed-gauge rail-on-rail level crossing at Cae Pawb.

The above all opened for service c.2010. There's no way the Britannia crossing could have been permitted if a road bypass of Porthmadog weren't already on the cards.

If you want to include tramways there are some level crossings due to open next month on Manchester Metrolink Trafford center line.

I know strictly speaking it was a rebuild, but the SAK (Stirling to Alloa) line has quite a few and IIRC was delayed in opening while some or all of them were re-specced from AHB to MCB with CCTV.

Beccles bypass was also opened in the late 1980s with an ABCL provided on the East Suffolk line. Unusual for such a new and fairly fast section of road I have always thought.

Would any new level crossings actually be allowed now?
AIUI the Rother Valley Railway will build a level crossing over the Robertsbridge Bypass, for which permission has been given. That will be a new crossing, as the road was built after the original railway closed.

The ORR is not objecting to it, but that doesn’t mean it has been given approval yet, as, apart from safety, the impact on road traffic is likely to be one of the key points at issue in the forthcoming public enquiry. However, if the ORR has opposed it it would have made overall approval much more of a challenge.

Brickyard Lane, Linby Colliery, Linby Town level crossings on the new Robin Hood line between Bulwell and Newstead. Reopened 1993?
Grives Lane between Newstead and Kirkby. Track relaid and opened 1995?

Llantrisant bypass level crossing for the line to Beddau might be one contender...that was the early 90s IIRC (late 80s even)

Ah, I'd remembered reading that planning permission had been granted, and I'd inferred (evidently wrongly) that that meant the crossing was approved. I see that the public enquiry you mentioned, into the T&WA Order, is due to begin in May, so I'll watch out for the outcome of that.

Not a new line though.

Cherry Hinton bypass was 1990 I think as when I moved into the new estate there in 1989 and I don’t remember it being open.

There is also an open level crossing at the old Gas Works site between Snowdon Street and Britannia Bridge.

The link between NR and the North Norfolk Railway at Sheringham? Not 'new' new, but it was fully removed for a good 40 years before opening in 2010

Bedwyn. A footpath crossing was resited a year-or-so ago. Whether you count it as the old crossing done up or a new one (as it is on a new site) is up to you.
