I have a DMI for dB Cargo next week for a trainee driver. Looking on the aslef website it looks like a great place to work, 52k, 32 hour working week, 33 days Annual leave. Assuming they have a pension scheme?

Does anyone have experience of working for them?

the only concern I have is how volatile is the industry. Am I likely to find myself out of work in the near future.
Hi, how did the DMI go ? anything unusual asked ? any tips ?

I think it went well but obviously you can never tell. The interview was quite relaxed compared to the MMI. They asked me what I knew about the company and a few competency questions About safety, customer service etc. Found it overall easier than the MMI and felt like a standard competency interview to be honest. I would just prepare some good examples and make sure you ask a couple of questions at the end when they ask you if you have any questions.

Hi mate, I'm ex police (now drive for DB) and I'm pretty sure that DB didn't even ask for a reference as I used my line manager as my contact and he never heard a thing.

Also, when I spoke to HR in the Met they told me if they provide a reference it literally just states the dates you work for them. I think the whole misconduct thing is to do with officers resigning under investigation then re-joining the police in another force a short while later. Do you remember that officer who pushed that bloke over during the riots years ago? He had been under investigation in another force but it was never passed to the met as it was never logged on his resignation.

hi mate, thanks for your post.

I spoke to the dps and hr last week who have stated that the reference will state “resigned under investigation” or “the officer is currently under investigation for a misconduct matter”. I would love to use my line manager, however I have been told current policy is that line managers are to forward all references onto hr and they are not to provide a reference themselves.

This has been going on for now 15 months. I am concerned that if I do not mention it prior to a reference coming back I may be withdrawn but equally I’m concerned I may be withdrawn if I disclose the issue.

thanks,
Sam.

Who do you currently work for? I assume it's the met?

When I handed in my resignation my line manager wasn't expecting it, which would suggest he had no contact in relation to a reference as he would have to have forwarded it on if that is the policy? Unless DB asked for one after they offered me the job but that wouldn't really make sense.

Either way I understand your concern. Personally I would leave it and if the questions comes up you can explain what its all about. Unfortunately I don't think other organisations would understand how pathetic and how long police investigations last. I had a misconduct complaint years ago after executing a warrant. I had no restrictions put in place but it took over 18 months to resolve. It took DPS that long to establish that the 'victim' was in prison for GBH serving an indeterminate sentence. They are a shambles.

Unfortunately it’s getting worse, a friend on mine was under investigation for over 2 years for something incredibly minor.

The only concern I have with not disclosing it is that my job offer gets withdrawn/I am kicked out for not disclosing it and then I’m out of a job. Where as if I disclose it would they be more likely to give me the benefit of the doubt.

as an employee yourself how would you think the managers/he would perceive this? Especially when it’s a matter concerning an off duty incident where I was found no case to answer by the cps.

Email from DB today stating DMI's on hold due to Corona virus advice

Do DB cargo ever have internal trainee driver roles? I have recently applied for a mobile operative position and was wondering if it was a route to become a driver?

They definitely do regularly advertise externally and internally for trainee/junior drivers, however given the current climate there is no certainty as to when the next recruitment drive will.

I have been in a similar circumstance, ex-pertner through Sh*t to see if it would stick. I was working with the police at the time and it was deemed nothing to answer. I have been able to get two different railway jobs and rejoin the police as a volunteer with that "on my record" they usually ask for additional information and when I explained everything all was well.
The investogation didn't show on any records that I am aware of, not sure about references. It showed up on my shotgun licence application!
All the best, trainee driver interviews are rare beasts you should always go.

it certainly is frustrating and also completely unfair.

I did have an interview with them in March but didn’t hear anything back, fingers crossed it’s because of the pandemic.

Frustrating doesn't cover it. Especially when I then tried to have her investigated for lying to police and it was ignored. Don't let it ruin your chance to be a train driver!

there not interested at all in what we have to say. To them it’s easier to try and get us out quietly. I can honestly say that during this whole investigation I have never been treated so badly in my whole life.

well done for getting out.

At least if you've had an offer (even if subject to medical etc) you are well on the way. It has struck me that their recruitment process is quite slow and rather inconsistent.
