Sorry to bump up the thread everyone but is the 10:23 XC service from Edinburgh to Glasgow Central booked for a double Voyager on Sundays? Was looking at JourneyCheck and found it formed of 9 coaches.

I don't care if its 8, 9 or 10 coaches. If it is then I might do Glasgow on the Sunday 19th April (instead of the 20th) in a few months time. That way I know the 10:23 starts in Edinburgh. I know a single Voyager working can happen but either way at least I've a good chance of getting a seat if not my booked one.

Not seen a double XC in Glasgow for a while .

Apparently 11:27 Plymouth to Newcastle was a double today but not sure whether that was a one-off due to various disruption.

11:27 Plymouth to Dundee just passed me at Northallerton as a double. Is this regular on Saturdays?

yes it is on booked timetable. As far as Newcastle. It’s a double.

Saturdays only.

It stopped being a double set on weekdays a little while ago, which I think is a shame considering how busy it gets. (the set which used to run Manchester to Bristol then attach now runs to Exeter)

On Saturday evening, I caught the 2044 service from Derby to York. When I arrived at the station, there was an empty 4-car set standing at Platform 1. The service train then arrived at Pl.1 (also a 4-car set) They coupled together and the train continued as a double Voyager with both sets in use, surprisingly.

Would the empty set have come from Central Rivers? I don't recall seeing such a move before with that particular service, does anyone know any more?

Is 07:31 Birmingham New Street to Manchester Piccadilly not booked a double anymore? It was only a single today and nothing on Journey Check. XC's Journey Check is one of the better ones out there for recording short-forms.

I think it is booked as a double, but I believe XC were 2 sets short at the start of the day.
I'm guessing they could possibly be re arranging things to arrange for more capacity on the Cheltenham services.

Looks like it. The screens at Stoke are showing the 0805 Manchester to Paignton as a double set as far as Bristol today.

Booked a single set today due to Cheltenham races.

Thanks all: surprised Cheltenham still went ahead in the light of current events but that's for another thread. So has 08:05 Manchester to Torbay been a double all week because of this?

Only as far as Bristol and only from Tuesday.

Was the extra carriage on the 0805 taken from the 0731 BHM-MAN?

If so then how busy is that service normally?
Monday to Thurday the 0805 MAN-BHM is fully rammed, you'd struggle to board at Wolves and sometimes even Stafford. I've failed to get a seat on that service many times when boarding at Stoke.

No since the 07:31 Birmingham to Manchester is only a double on a Friday as the second Voyager is freed up by an additional HST being in traffic. Said HST does nothing Monday to Thursday. (Maintenance maybe)

Probably few if any doubles out for the foreseeable as passenger figures drop off.

A few doubles into and out of Manchester today according to Journey Check. Under normal circumstances Manchester only witnesses an (erratic) double on Fridays and an (equally erratic) double on Sundays. Certainly none early-mid week apart from failures or ECS!

Not really that surprising. Run half the services but double them up to allow for social distancing.

Actually there are loads of obscure doubles today according to Journey Check. Probably just for this and maybe a few more weeks whilst things ramp up and otherwise spare sets can be used for social distancing as per 221129's post above. Manchester is still only receiving 1tph vice 2tph so that automatically frees up a few units from the Bristols/Exeters which are still not operating.

I don't think any Newcastle - Reading/Southampton services are running at the moment either, so that would also free up even more 220's and 221's to allow doubling up on Manchester-Reading/Bournemouth services and Edinburgh/Newcastle - Bristol TM/Plymouth services (a few of the latter have been doubled up this week on NE/SW services).

07:27 Manchester to Bournemouth has terminated at Birmingham due to "a bird hitting the train" according to Journey Check, however it's a double. The bird surely wouldn't have affected the rear set. Couldn't they have shunted the sets at Birmingham and carried on with the rear set as the front set? If things like this happen to doubles it almost defeats the point!

It was terminated due to extreme late running due to a TfW service hitting multiple pigeons and breaking an Air pipe. A replacement train ran from BHM.

Thanks for clarifying that it wasn't the XC which hit the bird.

Wonder why no doubles at weekends? Certainly at least one Bristol to Manchester service still isn't running... think the Bournemouth to Manchester uses sets freed up off this to strengthen during the week but not on weekends.

There are...

There certainly weren't many judging by what I could see on Trust over the weekend.

I can't remember about Saturday, but yesterday for example, I don't recall any double sets between Birmingham and Bristol and v.v, or between Birmingham and Reading/Newcastle. Maybe the odd one.

Yes I'm aware Bristol services were being diverted via Newport yesterday, but they didn't run hourly all day.
