Stretches of line that used to be through open countryside that is now a modern housing estate. The void left when former industrial buildings are demolished, even if they have been derelict for some time.

I'd agree Birmingham Snow Hill to Stourbridge Junction is a bit of an industrial wasteland, mostly devoid of the interesting variety of licos and goods traffic in sidings you could see until comparatively recently. But the line through Kiddy runs through suburban back gardens, a cutting, a new station then past the Severn Valley Railway diesel depot with often a row of 50's or a deltic to spot, and a steam train if you're lucky, then onto a viaduct with far-reaching views. Kidderminster may feature in the book "Crap towns" but the railway at least avoids the centre.....nice real ale pubs near the station though and worth a crawl round the heritage trail....sorry wandered off topic!!

The Atherton Line?

A slow trip through some of the most deprived areas of Northern England

It is so bloody slow when it's all-stops. I worked out the average speed from one end to the other is just 23mph! That is what makes it depressing to me above all else

As far as depressing lines go I'm suprised no one has mentioned Chester via Altrincham all stops

Hag Fold is sadly another story - I honestly cannot understand why Northern use this station or stop here.

For some reason Northern have started using this station a lot more: since the Dec 2019 timetable, two trains an hour stop at Hag Fold in each direction, up from the previous one.
The Blackburn to Wigan now additionally stops at Hag Fold. The Kirkby to Victoria continues to stop here, as it always has done. It is only the Leeds express which misses it out.
This now makes sure Hag Fold recieves the same level of service as Swinton and a far superior service than Moorside.

The Blackburn to Wigan is often worked by a 158 , meaning these units that were originally intended for express work are now stopping at The Hag :p

London Liverpool Street to Clapton. Especially on a slow train. Once you get past Tottenham Hale it's better, but that first bit.. eh.

Also Basingstoke to Winchester. Once past the Salisbury junction it's just plain boring. Green, but immensely boring. Seems to be more boring when you get closer to Winchester.

Couldn’t disagree more! I think the rolling hills and big fields are great!

That's a lovely bucolic route.
Yeah a very odd choice.

Stockport-Alty isn’t great, and the scenery west of Mouldsworth is pretty flat and dull. The long bit in the middle is full of delights though: urban as well as rural. Knutsford has a fine skyline, and the views from Northwich viaduct are impressive. Even Lostock Gralam has an interesting canal wharf and the heavy industry is still operational. The countryside on the fringes of Tatton Park and Delamere Forest is really pretty.

It's so slow and boring. Goes on forever, it's only going to Chester!! Stops every 3 minutes!
Used to be 142's most of the time!
Loads of school kids use it in the day and loads of drunks in the evening.

All the sections of line with trees blocking the view are grim. On my regular journeys this covers Guildford to Woking.

There have been times when I've seen a lovely sunset or cloud formation but no I can't take a photo due to the blasted trees in the way.

St Pancras International to Farringon, you get to see the mess that is the old Kings Cross Thameslink railway station

At least you still get Stockport's superb collection of traditional signal boxes to enjoy. For the timebeing anyway.

Personally I find those disused and half dismantled stations very interesting to look at :D

Japanese knotweed and giant hog weed out of the window all the way from Edinburgh to Perth. Apart from the wonderful view over the Forth Bridge.

The WCML from Motherwell more or less to Glasgow Central
I agree, the approaches to Glasgow Central are particularly depressing from all directions, the last wee bit I see from my Kilmarnock train very much so.

The dereliction of the Network Rail buildings (I presume) in the space between the Inverclyde/Ayrshire lines and the WCML on the last stretch is particularly shocking - a complete lack of any pride in their estate. What does that say about the quality of the organisation? Not much in my opinion.

I second this. The barren wasteland that is Smithy Lye coming from the Paisley direction is horrible.

I cant think of anything more depressing than pretty much all the lines out of London Liverpool Street.
