Can I ask what others have chosen for their uniform? I am struggling to decide. On the one hand I think a full suit is smart but the practicality of polo tops and a soft shell jacket is appealing considering the amount of time I will be in the cab.

Any advice would be appreciated!

I’m in the same position but think I may go for a 60/40 split in favour of the polo shirts.

I see. I have been reading the forums here and it seems like a hot debate as to wether you should be suited and booted or wear the polo tops. I will give it a think over today and send it off.

I went half and half but rarely wear the shirt and tie, normally if there's no polo's clean!

I know its a different TOC but ATW drivers used to wear a shirt and clip on tie with the soft shell style "drivers" coat. I think that would look tidy with some trousers and shoes.

It would be comfy for me too.

Is the polo really tight fitting or a little looser around the sides and pits? I am average build. Think it might be time to take a walk to Man Pic and see some of the staff wearing the uniform.

If you wear the shirt/tie you're supposed to wear the suit jacket. The soft shell jacket goes with the polo. The polo is not a tight fit and I am also average build. It fits me fine and I much prefer wearing it than a suit/tie combo. I don't have any shirts anyway so always wear polos.

I suppose this might sound silly but what do you think the chances are of TPE postponing the course due to corona virus? I ask as it is supposedly 'peak' in around 2 weeks.

Good question - I think the situation is so fluid decisions won’t be made until closer to the time

It’s service as normal for now. There’s currently a course already on-going with qualified drivers new to TPE as well as other grades/roles. Northern have also been type training staff at Huddersfield too.

There’s also discussion taking place surrounding what is going to happen if a new employee (training or qualified) catches Covid-19 or chooses to self-isolate as sick pay currently isn’t payed until 6 months of employment.

I see. That is good news it's still on for the 30th. I assume there will be more courses in the future for the others still waiting to hear from DMI etc.

I emailed last week asking for an update in regards to DMI interview dates, they replied within an hour said it will take a while to arrange. Given the COVID-19 situation, I am not expecting anything to pop into my inbox overnight so I can just take this time to revise revise revise.

who did you email?
I’m waiting on the results of my MMI which I should have been given the end of last week, was going to shoot an email off, is it just first group careers email address?

I'm still waiting to see if it's a yes or no from my DMI which was on the 4th of February. Given the latest developments today I doubt I will hear anything before the end of April or May now. It will be interesting to see how training courses will be affected that are due to start at the end of March.

Courses and training are still going ahead as planned for the foreseeable.

There is currently a course running at the moment as yet unaffected, an induction course starting the end of this month, and another scheduled the beginning of May at Huddersfield.

Has anyone spoken to HR to enquire if there are any issues surrounding the 30th March course at this time?

No @TPEwannabe I don't think so. It will be interesting to know. Having read some of the other threads on here; some peoples courses have been cancelled and others have fear as they have already finished their notice for previous work and there is an unknown for them.

I’m worried to be honest, but think I’m also massively overthinking the situation too!

I am sure everything will be fine. And if it means postponing it for a short while I think we will still have our place on the next available course. If they feel it is necessary to take precaution its probably justified.

After SARS/MERS etc there is a need to take it seriously even if the mortality rate is relativity low compared to those previous. I remember MERS was something quite crazy at 35% Coronavirus is currently around 1% but business's have a duty to protect everyone.

IF you are very worried I suggest contacting them. They are very good!

The way the economy is going now I wouldn’t take nothing for granted. There’s going be life before covid 19 and life after. A trainee course pales into insignificance.

I didn't say to that it wouldn't happen just my opinion. Your right there is more important things to think about than a training course but it is also difficult to ask people to see beyond their own concerns and how it affects them and their families.

Life after will probably go back to normal as it has done with the 6 types of virus before this one. Albeit with an evolved sense of how to protect ourselves in the future. The truth is that people forget it pretty quickly and move on (I mean this as in generally. But of course for the people directly affected life would never be the same after losing someone). History shows this.

I stand by that anyone who has concerns should contact HR. They have been excellent and try to help out as much as possible.

Just a friendly update for anyone concerned about the current virus situation. I spoke to HR today and was told that the courses are going ahead. They are keeping an eye on things and while the actual trains will more than likely go down to a skeleton crew with minimum trains operating; for us trainees it is as normal.

Of course they will monitor the situation. Courses continue as planned for now.
