Hey guys,

Curiosity gets the better of me some times and whilst tracking a service in the Carstairs area, I came across this funny U shaped line that seems to go no where and doesn't seem to be used anymore although I may be wrong.

I was just wondering if anyone has any information on what it is?

Cheers,

Luke

Have a look on YouTube, there are some good videos from about 9-10 years ago that show the facility in use.

Love seeing stuff like this. A solid reminder of the history of the UK! I assume the concrete looking areas indicate where the loading facility was in relation to the railway?

Mostly Glasgow-ish. Mostly.
On a related note last week I noticed a fair amount of OHLE within the Carstairs triangle. On an isolated piece of track there's a run of cantilevers attached to masts at both usual height and head height, as well as a run of what looked like F&F conductor bar again at head height. Is there some sort of OHLE training or development setup based there?

There is a maintenance base at Carstairs which has OLE staff, it is a training facility for them and other maintenance staff.

The site of quite a high profile demonstration 12 years ago. When you read to the end the second last paragraph, the operation is like something out of another age...

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/mobile/scotland/glasgow_and_west/7784408.stm

Six environmental campaigners have been arrested after a protest at a coal rail depot in South Lanarkshire.
The three men and three women were removed from the Ravenstruther terminal, near Lanark, by British Transport Police.

The protesters from Coal Action blocked the main gate and attached themselves to a coal conveyor belt on the site.

They said they were highlighting the pollution caused by burning fossil fuels such as coal.

The demonstration began at 0600 GMT on Monday.

The campaigners, from Edinburgh, Glasgow and the local area, said they had prevented the delivery of thousands of tonnes of coal to power stations across Scotland.

One of the protesters, Beth Whelan, said: "Local authorities, the Scottish Government and companies such as Scottish Coal and Scottish Power are ignoring the scientific evidence on climate change.

"We have to take responsibility for our climate and our future, and stop the coal industry and its expansion. This is what we doing today - acting responsibly."

A spokesman for British Transport Police said the last arrests had been made about 1445 GMT.

He said there had been no disruption to rail services in the area.

Scottish Coal, who operate the Ravenstruther depot, said no coal trains had run in or out of the terminal on Monday for health and safety reasons.

A spokesman said: "We would like to assure all our customers that there was no disruption to coal supplies.

"Latest figures show that coal is providing over 40% of the UK's energy needs.

"Without this valuable resource, almost half of all homes and businesses in Britain would be without power."
