An 8 car class 350 double worked 1M98 1310 Glasgow central to Manchester Airport today, I thought only the Edinburgh services were 8 car, does anyone know why this happened?

I was on that pairing heading up to Glasgow on the 0916 off Manchester Piccadilly. The front unit heading north had a smashed windscreen where the units were coupled.

Not see a 8 car TPE to Glasgow for ages . They are diagrammed for Edinburgh runs

The 04:22 Glasgow Central to Manchester Airport has been booked 8 cars since the timetable change. It detaches on arrival at the Airport with the block end portion attaching to the following Edinburgh service.

Was briefly on the 15:00 Manchester Airport to Glasgow service yesterday, and it was a very crowded 185. Is this scheduled, or related to the technical issues above?

The 1500 was also a 185 on Friday. Standing passengers from Piccadilly to Wigan.

I hope you weren't as it didn't run from the airport or Man Picc due to engineering works. :p

There are different diagrams on Fridays and the weekends for 185s in order to make most of the Manchester to Edinburgh trains 8 coaches long.

That is the problem, everyone going to Wigan. This chaos will end in May thankfully.

So TPE will run via Bolton again? Wigan NW loses its fast service to Manchester, which seems to have been very popular. Hope it can be replaced.

It's also fallacious to whinge about Wigan to Manchester passengers using TransPennine services. When they were first introduced there was marketing in Wigan desperate to get people to use the new services in order to reduce the problem caused by the reduction in Bolton to Manchester capacity. If nobody used the TransPennine services, the semi-fast services via Bolton could not cope. Anyway luckily this will all be reorganised soon.

Sorry I meant Friday
Given the route options (I actually went from Oxford Road to Wigan) I would naturally gravitate to the faster, non stop service service, rather than chugging through Bolton on a 150. Similarly on the way back from Manchester to Wigan that evening, I waited in "Wigan Central" for the fast TPE service (rather than taking a Northern Service), which then happened to be 15 minutes late anyway, but was a 4 car 350!

Almost all the TPE Scottish services have pax standing between Manchester and Wigan. From May, they'll just be standing between Bolton and Manchester instead I'm sure.

As for fast Wigan - Manc services; there'll be the Barrow/Windermere Northern services over Chat Moss, but also the revised semi-fast via Bolton (to Alderley Edge) which iirc is due to switch to departing from Wigan NW, and become a 769 (eventually).

A Northern only and Northern + Metrolink ticket offering would help to avoid fast services becoming full of passengers. I regularly use long distance services to get to Piccadilly but I would be prepared to avoid them to save money.

I agree, though I doubt TfGM would countenance it somehow.

Perhaps running Non Stop to Lancaster may help , still be busy though

It would just push congestion onto the Northern services to Wigan/Bolton and Preston from Manchester.
Congestion to/from Wigan should ease with the new timetable, but will just switch to Bolton. Longer trains from TPE will help overall, eventually, but whether they'll be longer enough is the question.

No booked 8 coach 350s anymore since 2019 or even late-2018 (can't remember when the 350 struck a horse in the Lakes), and definitely none needed right now apart from maybe ECS.

If there's one thing that's quite useful about this crisis, provided staffing levels don't drop too much it'll basically resolve the rolling stock crisis by giving TOCs a chance to get things ready before services fully restart.

Oh well. Mods, lock the thread if that is the case since we already have a thread about 8-car working on LNWR.
