Iv received my contact and have start date so so you think I’ll get paid until I start my course as Iv nearly finished my notice period at my current job!

If it's NWR I would be pretty certain they'll honour it... whether they will actually want you to come into work is another matter...

I start trainee driver at Man Pic for TPE end of March and they have said its all going ahead. They have reduced their trains to skeleton crew though so it will be interesting times for sure!

I'd imagine that TOC training centres need to adhere to the same advice as any other school, college or university and that was to close from yesterday.

While essential rail employees have been deemed key workers for school/child care, I don't imagine that applies to trainees.

I'd certainly hope that TOCs who have issued contracts to people who have not actually started yet will have their start dates honoured and those mid course will probably be sent home , possibly with revision/homework etc.

Some of our trainee's were coming in two at a time to reduce class number's .

Let’s hope the courses get up and running again as soon as it’s safe and possible to do so.

Sounds like that might be a workaround, though a normal class of around 12 being done 2 at a time could be painful. I guess a trainer could do a couple of people for 3 hours, send them away with reading then do some more.

I'd guess TOCs are going to very reluctant to stopp all trainee training for 12 weeks or whatever as it's going to cause more issues down pipeline when it this thing is over.

I also start at the end of march and haven’t heard anything so I’m presuming it is still going ahead for now.

Anyone awaiting a start date/has a start date from SWR heard anything?

Hi, I start on the 30th (of this month), and I’ve been told they’re going ahead with it - though this was on Tuesday...

Training with First TPE has now been suspended
Same with GWR. I’m glad I’m at the handling stage now (will be - hopefully - qualifies soon) so it won’t affect me, as it’s only the classroom based training concerned. Although 12 weeks paid would be nice for family time, I would imagine it will get very frustrating. All the best to you.

Will you still be doing your hours Stigy? I.e two in a cab? My TOC have suspended all training today.

Apparently so, at the moment at least. As long as neither of us are presenting with symptoms of course. Are you mid-training too?

I would assume that we will get a call in the morning. As I haven't started the course yet I do wonder what TPE will do with us.

No mate, qualified. Was just wondering what other TOC's are doing. Like I say, my TOC has stopped all training, whether it be ride outs, trainees, assessments and front ending etc etc. With us meant to be social isolating now I can see this happening across the industry to be honest.

Yes, your start date is in writing. It’s contractual and you have evidence of this. Might be worth asking your current employer if you can stay on until the new start date although they’re under no obligation to say yes.

In theory they could start classroom training via online interactive video but that would need everyone to have the right equipment, skills etc. There’s an app called zoom where the trainer can mute everyone so you’re not all talking over each other. You can “raise a hand” if you want to talk and be unmuted to ask etc. That’s 21st century stuff though and this is the railway lol!

All front ending has been suspended along with the classroom training I believe, and all trainees who were in the classroom have been told not to come to depot and to stay at home. Looks like e-learning may well be the way forward...I guess it makes sense to have those of us who are at this stage to get qualified and become productive, with the benefits outweighing the risks?

Whereas my company are still happily chucking people together in less-than-hygienic loco cabs.....
