They don't keep to time on the peak Maesteg's, but I think passengers would rather the extra carriage and be five mins late, than rammed and on time.

The few times I've caught them on the Ebbw line they've been on time (maybe I was lucky). They also have the ability to make up time between Pye Corner and Central. I agree, the comfort levels are a big step up. They're really pleasant inside.

I wonder, could the sluggish performance of the 170s make TfW reconsider whether they want to keep them in the long term (and perhaps keep hold of some 175s instead)?

It does seem odd that the changes for TfW include bringing in 170s but getting rid of 175s.

The key reason is that they need both fleets right now (but will need far fewer once the new-build stock arrives).
Plus they deemed it more worth while to take the 175s off long haul and move them on then to use them on rural services which they are not optimised and the 170s are

extra carriage? The train has always been 3 carriages. It was previously run by 175s.

Also, 5 mins is generous. It is often more than 10 - which not only delays the whole line, but makes me miss a connecting bus service.

But those 175s rarely worked the Cheltenham-Maesteg diagrams. In all my time living on the route I've only ever had a 175 twice. That extra carriage on the 170s is a godsend

There is a 175 now booked Mons to Fris on one Maesteg to Cheltenham from the December Timetable.

2G56 0916 MST to CNM

That feels odd as my bedroom window looks on to the Wye Bridge and I'm yet to see it. Any idea what time it is?

The 170s have given us a service on TfW that finally equals that of XC in terms of rolling stock quality, now for a decent service? One can dream

Nick, the specific service being discussed wasn’t part of the Cheltenham>Maesteg diagram. It was always a 175 - I catch this service daily.

It was 170204 that hit the tractor & trailer between Harling Road & Thetford & it had been back in traffic with GA for years before transferring to TfL a few months ago

It was booked a three car 175, then it went to a 158 from Holyhead to Cardiff with a 153 attachment to go on to Maesteg so a while. Then there's also the times a 175/0 turned up. If I recall correctly, a 175/1 was nicked to provide a train for the Royal Welsh specials, then it was kept to allow a 175/0 to be made available for a refurb.

But strangely enough, it's only when the 170 is rammed. It's able to keep to time in the off peak or when no-one's travelling.

Sorry to open up an inactive thread, but do we know what the status of the 170s is now? Are all the Cheltenham services operated by them? I know the ones on Sunday used not to be.

Only seen 170s over past few months but tend to use 2 or 3 car units randomly, one day a service may be a 2 car then next day a 3 car.

Too difficult to diagram specific lengths to specific services or simply because of the altered timetables?

It would look like it's due to altered timetables currently and those trains are fairly empty anyway so doesn't matter if 2 or 3 car.

Makes sense really, simplifies trying to fit unit lengths to specific diagrams and added complication I'm sure TfW can do with out at present
