Hi, I’ve just submitted an application for a trainee train driver role with SWR.

6 months ago I had failed on the online assessment so this time I want to make sure I don’t fail again, the email says I have 48 hours to complete the assessment and if I pass it (SJT I believe) then there will be another assessment.

Can anyone help/advice me please?

I completed it a couple of weeks ago for SWR. SJT questions in my opinion are hard to give advice on as it really is all about how you would deal with a certain situation so the answer should come naturally. I passed the first assessment and now waiting for the second one.

I don’t believe there is a second assessment. I passed mine back in November and I’ve got my assessment day booked in now.

I failed the SJT last year so I’ll do some practice test on internet just to get idea of how to do it right.

So there is no second online assessment once you pass the online SJT?

Taken from the Email:

Please note if you are applying for a Trainee Train Driver position and pass this assessment, you will receive another email shortly after completion inviting you to take part in a second assessment.

Hmmm I thought that is what the email said but maybe the one I have already completed and passed is the only one. What depot did you apply for?

So is it just SJT? Is there no other assessment?

Has anyone received any reply after answering the SJT?

Yup can confirm it’s 19 SJT questions and if you did well you will instantly get an email saying you’ve passed and will progress to next stage ( assessment days )but if you’ve failed then you won’t instantly get an email as last time I got an email after 48 hours telling me I was not successful.

I did the 19 question SJT test online one time, and I didn't receive an email for a fortnight saying that i'd failed.By then the job had even closed for applicants.

That’s correct I did the same one about 6 months ago and 48 hours later they emailed saying I wasn’t successful, did the same one last night and I got the email straight away saying I passed it

I believe this is because of the amount of people that applied, although you passed they only progress the top scorers to the next stage, my mate did it the other day and his email said only the top scorers would progress.

Yes my email also said only top scorers will progress and then this evening I got another email with invitation for assessment day on 8th Feb, really short time to prepare:(

The email I received said I was unsuccessful and they couldn’t give me feed back and could not apply for the role for another 6 months .I always thought that if you passed the online assessments you could apply for the same role again .

To be honest it’s only really the GBT, MMI and the DMI that you can practice for, the other tests are more like you can either do them or you can’t, don’t get me wrong it’s good to have an understanding of what you will be doing, so go through the practice stuff they give you, I would also download the GB test from here
https://www.railforums.co.uk/attachments/bourdon-zip.36183/ And print it off to practice. Good luck with it all, all the help you need is on these forums so use the search feature to help you.

Thank you so much, yes I will practice through the materials they gave and I’ve found some dots tests on internet to print off but I’ll also look into the link you mentioned. Thanks again :)

Well from where I live it’s 47min drive by car but that’s without traffic yet I’ve been successful. Did you try call them and ask why they said you passed first then said unsuccessful?

Location shouldn’t matter anyone as they ask you if you’re willing to relocate. Could be technical error? A friend of mine applied and he didn’t even receive online assessment lol

Just a quick question re: the online sjt tests. I have probably done 12 or 13 now over the last 3 years. Having 'failed' all bar 1 (?) which was for a position near to where I live. I was wondering as all the other positions I have applied for were 45-60 mins from my home postcode. Was the distance/travelling time my downfall ?.

Hey there. I've applied for quite a few jobs under the First umbrella and this is how I think it works imo:

Assessment 1 pass -> assessment 2 pass -> early assessment day due to scoring high or sit in a pile and wait -> later assessment day or filtered out due to a fresh batch of higher scorers.

I've been 'unsuccessful' twice for Guard with an application that has beaten three paper sifts.

That said, I'm 40-45 minutes from Waterloo so maybe someone did read my application and chose someone 20 minutes away over me. But you have to think about what is the easiest way for them to get the numbers down

You are probably right. Even the one I passed I didn't receive an email until weeks after I 'passed ' the online stuff. So I even thought that I'd 'failed' it. Everyone's take on customer service situations is different,so is there a wrong or right answer really.
