Shopping was supposed to be as infrequently 'as possible' which is nice and vague. Again feels like another case of don't take the proverbial.

Bojo is a libertarian, absolute limits are not his thing. But absolute limits are silly, anyway - if you can only go once a week shopping, what if they've got no bread/milk when you go?

I thought it was once a week shopping trip and once a day exercise. - could be wrong though

Simply as infrequently as possible, I don't believe they've set an actual limit but merely suggested once a week would be ideal, though that's not possible for everyone.

Thanks for the clarification everyone - suppose it shows the government advice is not clear

My comment regarding the lack of specificity should be taken as a complaint! I agree that absolutes should be avoided whenever possible.

It's clear enough, why do people seem to want the Government to tell them when they can go and use the toilet? This seems to be a shockingly common view, particularly in younger people.

Use your common sense, it's clear what the intention of it is.

They even use nice colour coded slogans!

The meaning of the Government’s advice is perfectly clear to me.

It’s completely un-necessary to create finely detailed instructions to cover every possible situation. We have been given a clear broad sense of what is acceptable and people should use their common sense, take some personal responsibility and behave like adults.

Sometimes on this board I feel folk seem to take a peculiar pleasure in trying to identify exceptions to all sorts of things that wouldn’t trouble me for a moment. Maybe it's just me?

That is just a reflection of society, where lots of people want certainty and/or to push the limits because they think they are more exceptional than average.

Makings of a baby boom - there is apparently a global condom shortage just as everyone is stuck indoors.....

Ventured to the local Co-op for the first time in a week, a slightly surreal atmosphere queuing outside 2 metres apart. People were still reasonably calm, there was a subtle, but noticeable tension as people eyed each other up for signs of the virus. Inside, precious little in the way of meat or veg, and the usual tinned veg were very short in supply. Luckily we didn't need a great deal, and getting the essentials we needed gave me an opportunity to grab some of the limited beer & wine, but it felt almost like we had been chucked back to the Soviet Union in the 1980s.

I just went to the Co-op too!
It was a picture of calm and pretty much fully stocked. I haven’t been out properly since Monday and I seem to have forgotten how to function now. I only realised I’d left my wallet at home when I got to the checkout...

Just went to the local shop at the end of the road. Well stocked with everything including bog roll, milk, bread etc and everybody was being sensible over 2m spacing despite it being a very small shop.

I think I'll just shop there until this is over, I can't be bothered with what is being reported from the larger shops.

Yes I think I’m going to stick with the smaller shops. I’ve seen pictures of the large stores near us with massive queues outside.

Managed to get all I need (not necessarily all what I wanted) for another week (at least) indoors at my local smallish co-op this morning. I'm really glad I'm avoiding the massive superstores.

For a relativity small supermarket I find they have quite a good selection of red wine. :D

I've just been to my local Aldi. A slightly surreal experience having to queue to get in with a bouncer on the door. The majority of shelves were well stocked so got everything I went in for.

Went for my weekly shop this morning for the first time since last Saturday. Was pleasently surprised - able to get most things I wanted.

Only problem is - it's not my usual one and the choice of beer is fairly limited - hope I get to go back to my big Sainsburys before I run out !

Me too! Not helped by a copper on a bike (not seen around here for about a decade) following me into the shop, coincidentally of course, but I was able to leave my bag of shopping and go the fifty yards home (being the Co-Op, it all had to be voided and rescanned, of course!) feeling an utter burke, an increasingly common trait

Love it.
Hang on a minute. A policeman on a bicycle..? Just what’s going on west of here?
Is there some kind of Ealing Comedy being filmed in Penzance this week Busaholic?

I'd get a job as an extra, at least. Yes, the number of police vehicles and personnel seen in a fairly deserted, even desolate, Penzance this week even exceeded the totally empty buses which, for political reasons, have not been culled one jot here yet (different matter after Sunday, though.) Does make you wonder why we're so often told when we call the police on a Saturday night there are only two on duty west of Camborne/Helston. Do they come out of the woodwork?

Same here. I have found my local smallish Co op really good. Quite well stocked, except toilet paper, and not at all busy mid afternoon. Enough of everything I need, although choice of some items a bit limited. I don’t think I will go anywhere else during the next few months and will probably continue to shop there more often in the future.

I prefer the Tesco Express/Sainsbury's Local/Co-op type store format anyway. Now they've all got a "free from" section I don't necessarily need to go to a big place anyway. You can do your shop far more quickly than a big shed type place.

Most UK supermarkets were this sort of size before we imported the hypermarche from France, and most of them in Germany, Aldi/Lidl aside, still are.

It is strange isn’t it? I’ve seen more police cruising around this week than I have for years.
I guess the paperwork has gone out of the window for a while..?

Or there is less crime to respond to, few court cases to attend.....and of course they stick out more on an empty road

.

I find those small shops never have what I want (pre virus).

Aldi and Lidl are small as well. The discount chains (Aldi, Lidl, Netto, Penny, etc.) all have pretty much equally-sized markets. Rewe and Edeka markets tend to be a bit larger, Kaufland even a little more so. The hypermarket concept that is so popular in other countries (France for example) has never really caught on in Germany. The only chains I can think of are Real and Globus (and also Metro, but they are membership-only and target mostly businesses) and they have a small market share.
