Barcelona - since the Catalans would not leave their area?
Bilbao - since the Basques would not leave their area?

Zamora. The bishop told people that germ theory was a Communist/Protestant Plot, and to avoid getting infected they had to come to Mass at the cathedral for nine days on the trot and kiss various Holy Relics. The ensuing 10.1% death rate was the highest in Europe.

First time I’ve participated in this thread. At what point is it decent to give clues?
As the question setter, it's up to you, but I'd suggest that a clue is a good idea if everyone is misinterpreting the question, or if nobody's offered a guess for a day or so.

It's also a good idea to reply to incorrect guesses and tell them so, as then the posters will start thinking of another possible answer. (You can choose to give some clues in this way, such as "no, wrong country" , or "try a smaller city" , or "you're close" .)

Most of a week gone by: no activity; and if I read things rightly, the correct answer to the 1918 question has been furnished. Could we consider "resuming service", with a fresh question from someone?

No connection with John Cleese, Songs, Monty Python or the names of working animals. I'll come back with a clue if nobody gets closer.

That may be a coincidence. What I had in mind has a martial purpose.

I may be wrong on the names of the tools... I haven't Googled, so it's effectively a guess!

Going by the latest clues, I'd say something to do with bomb disposal as my next guess?

A bomb disposal vehicle could be a "Wheelbarrow" which may have a "pigstick" attached and be operated by Felix - the cat with nine lives. That is getting into the right area, especially with one of the "animals". Not quite on the money yet.

In Northern Ireland, a Ferret was an Army Scout Car and, I think, the Army Personnel Carrier was known by the soldiers (and the Police) as a "Pig" … am I on the right track?

Correct, the Humber "Pig" and Ferret Scout Car are wheeled armoured military vehicles used in various theatres. So the enclosure where they were kept is a military base. EbbwJunction1 gets the floor.
